Runtime error for atibtmon.exe when disconnecting AC power cord

Everytime I disconnect my AC power cord Windows 8 shows a Erro Dialog:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\atibtmon.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Anyone having the same problem?

Any hotfix for this?

Vari bright option:

Power -> Power Play -> uncheck Enable Vari-Bright

Unchecking the "Vari Bright" option in the ATI Catalyst Control Center resolved the issue for me as well. It seems this option dims the brightness of the display when unplugged; however, I believe Windows also does this (or, at least it does on my Dell XPS 16). Perhaps two programs attempting to essentially do the same thing are the cause of the atibtmon issue?

I encountered this problem with my Pavilion DV6 after upgrading to W8 64bit as well and it's more irritating than it ought to be. For what it's worth though, I opened the AMD Vision Engine Control Center and disabled the "Vari Bright" option under the Power tab and that seemed to fix getting the error message every time my laptop is unplugged. Doesn't fix the underlying problem and will will decrease my unplugged-time a bit, but I can live with that.

Thanks for the legwork though, Amiarage. Looks like we;ll need to content ourselves with waiting for ATI to fix it.

atibtmon.exe is not a System file, but ATI's Catalyst Control Program. It seems to conflicts with Windows 8.1 or 10. After i moved it, the problem was gone. The important thing to notice is that when the AC charger is unplugged, the laptop still goes in to saving power mode, and the opposite with charger plugged back. I tried the other suggestions but they did not work for me. I have an HP CQ56 with the Phenom II Dual Core 2.9 Processor, and 4 megs of Ram. I am not the first to suggest this solution. After it occurred to me, I found out other persons did the same with good results.

Well I sure wish I would have seen it then instead of finally figuring it out today. In any case, hopefully folks without the "vari bright" option who also don't want to move or rename system files will find one of our replies helpful.

Sorry you didn't see it Annie. I did not find it on the MS Community stuff. Like yourself, I was not about to remove things I knew nothing about. I do have the tech website name and info tucked away and after doing a lot of reading, decided to try his fix. It worked and I have had no problems since. Do you have an HP laptop too?? Apparently it is mainly with that particular brand. Good luck. Now I will look for the next glitchy thing on here. Task Host.exe.......I may just take it over to my tech.
