I was having this problem too. Solved it by following the directions here:

http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/11811-windows-8-wifi-help.html

This part in the first reply fixed the problem:

"With upgrades sometimes winsock or the TCP/IP stack gets corrupted. To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a timehitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)"

Hope this helps someone else.

Cheers.

I have the exact same problem, appearing aswell after the update. Nothing above working for me either.

2 months later and still no solution it looks like.

I have tried all of the above and resetting the adapter

My particular problem is associated with Intel Wi USB (USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller driver issue. It seems the Windows update has made that inoperable. uninstalling and reinstalling has not solved the problem either. Additionally there is no older version of this that I can find to roll back the driver.

On one of the resets in the Netsh int ip reset, it states that it has failed, 4th reset only states " . failed. " will try other websites for more solutions and check back here periodically i guess

If people are still having the "'WiFi' doesn't have a valid IP configuration", and going into cmd is too daunting, or it didn't work, resetting the IP configuration I've given to the computer in question via the router solved all my problems.

I'm not very good with computers but fiddling around without needing to change any major settings on my laptop really help to solve this problem. So I apologize in advance if you find it patronising (this is more for the non-computer experts at home)!

If you remember assigning a specific IP address for your laptop to your router, read on or at least give this one a shot:

    1. Log in to your modem's router configuration. Directions to get there may be on the manual for the modem.
    2. Navigate to your router's DHCP client list, or similar.

    What is it?

It is a list that shows you the computers currently connected to your modem.

    1. Delete the computer in question from the client list. If you don't know the computer's name:

Right-click My Computer > Choose PropertiesThe name should be located at the lower half of the window.

    1. Check your troubled computer's network connection now. If there are no changes to the status and it's still showing a yellow exclamation mark, refresh by disconnecting and reconnecting or going to a fresh webpage.

If you check the list in your router's client list again, you should be able to see your computer's name reappear on the list as it's reconnected to your modem once more.

If the above didn't work, then I'm sorry your problem might be more serious for this troubleshooter.
