I was having this problem too. Solved it by following the directions here:

http://www.eightforums.com/network-sharing/11811-windows-8-wifi-help.html

This part in the first reply fixed the problem:

"With upgrades sometimes winsock or the TCP/IP stack gets corrupted. To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a timehitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)"

Hope this helps someone else.

Cheers.

I was able to run as administrator, but upong resetting, got this:

    Resetting Global, OK!

    Resetting Interface, OK!

    Resetting Neighbor, OK!

    Resetting , failed.

    Access is denied.

    Resetting OK!

Should I worry about the access is denied issue?

OK All of this command prompt **** doesn't work... we tried everything... what finally worked was this and was so much simpler Because of those "Access is denied" try uninstalling (in Device Manager) the network adapter and then restart and let Windows discover the adapter and reinstall the driver. Also try the repairs in Safe Mode.

Oh man.  I was really stressed today because I couldn't get online and I had an upcoming deadline.  My network app wouldn't work.  I switched to my previous computer (Windows 7) and that didn't work.  I downloaded my app to a netbook computer.  That failed.  I downloaded my app to another laptop.  Driver didn't load.  I kept going over in my mind -- what was I going to use as an excuse.

I found this thread.  Tried a few suggestions.  The worse one was MicroSoft Help.

Since there were six pages in this thread, I wanted to find the latest entry.  Jeremey.  What a lifesaver.  Thank you.  Your suggestion was the very last one on the very last page.  Worked for me in less than a minute.  Got my job in with an hour to spare.

That solved my wireless connection.  Still don't know why I can't connect through my modem and router.  Thanks again, Jeremey, and everyone else.
