Check your date, time and timezone.

Check for malware:

Download, install, run, update and perform full system scans with the following two applications:

Removing everything they find. Rebooting when needed. (You can uninstall one or both when done.)

Then perform an online scan with the eSet Online Scanner. Remove whatever is found.

Reboot.

Get the System Update Readiness Tool (save it) and right-click on it and "Run as Administrator". Choose the right one for you:

Let it run/fix things.

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it is still failing, attempt this next:

Reset your Windows Update Components with this FixIt:How do I reset Windows Update components?

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it still fails, try this...

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

net stop wuauserv cd %systemroot% ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old net start wuauserv 3. Reboot 4. Try updating.

**Important** The following issues occur when you do this:

  • Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
  • When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed.
  • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and from Windows Update, you will have to re-select this option from the Windows Update Web site.

**Note** If the issue is resolved and you can successfully download and install updates, you can safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

STILL failing? We have something else to try...

Use this FixIt:

How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent

Reboot.

Register the WU components:

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

regsvr32 Jscript.dll regsvr32 wuapi.dllregsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Reboot.

Try updating.

If it still fails after that - repeat this part ONCE more...

Reset your Windows Update Components with this FixIt:How do I reset Windows Update components?

Reboot.

Try updating.

Come back and let everyone know how you faired.

    I have the same problem.

I have done everything according to the instructions but without success.

I thing that every thing started after installation of KB2676562 and KB2724197 plus one more update(all 3 of them have been shown as 14 KB each) on 14.12.2012

The same problem 1:1. After automatic updates since 2o13 o1 o3. Looks like these two KB* destroy W7 update system. And these two updates installs day by day... Successfuly :)

    Hello,

I've run into this same problem.  I am using Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) & have followed each of the steps above without success.  No malware, all spyware killed. I noticed an update did not run correctly using the system update readiness tool.  KB947821 seems to stall out (do nothing & time out) in this update readiness tool but it did finish its install upon a 2nd attempt to use the tool.  I am noticing an update occuring upon every reboot.  Please help.

The command prompt solutions did not seem to help the situation other than changing my update history to say I've never run any updates ever.  I know this to be false, it was working perfectly up until a big patch of security updates was released mid to late November.  Then I continued recieving the same update which would tell me was successfully installed only to que it up again on next windows update.

I ran the fixit program for windows update & started getting the 80080005 error repeatedly.  If I had a system restore point that was saved in the middle of november I'd probably not have any problems.  No such luck.  Any help would be much appreciated.

rebuilt the hard drive from scratch. that fixed the problem. Do not trust the "easy transfer" option. many key files like my outlook file did not come over. i had to dig out an old backup that norton had done for me. there were others that i'm afraid i have now forgotten. just will never trust microsoft again to move the data properly.

Agreed.  Actual backups are much better and make sure what you WANT is protected.
