Why did Microsoft discontinue the Zune HD?

I have been a loyal Zune/XBOX customer for years and now looking to replace my 8gb Zune that I've had for 4 or 5 years and cannot find a Zune HD anywhere. Since it's been discontinued Amazon has jacked up the price of a new one. I honestly think that Zune is far superior to Ipod in the MP3 department. Now I'm gonna be forced to buy an Ipod Touch.  I kinda feel betrayed by Microsoft.

Hi Zombie79,

Thank you for your question and your concern. I believe the answer can be summed up with in the first sentence of the press release, "...going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players". We appreciate and share your feelings regarding the Zune device, however we have decided to move forward with a new strategy and we hope that we will be able to get you back on board soon.

    Yes it shouldn't matter whether it unlocked or not, as I've giving my buddy my unlocked Samsung Focus while I await my HTC Titan and it syncs perfectly

    The Zune brand as a whole was just excellent. and im not saying this as a Microsoft fan, but i just found the old zune 30 my dad got when i was twelve and rembered zunes fate. i liked the interface better and dident understand why all my friends had ipods when something that had wifi and could share music was selling for cheaper. anyway im really hoping for a ZHD2 that runs windows phone apps, but has the ZHD interface. that would be really cool.

    Has anyone tried purchasing a cheap unlocked Windows Phone 7 for ZunePass use yet? Say what you will but my wife and I will not switch to Windows Phone 7 as our primary mobile phone. ZunePass doesn't care if it's on an unlocked phone without any cell service, does it? I can't imagine why it would require that.

    I fully understand Microsoft's point of strategy going forward with the Zune phone lineup.  I own a Zune HD, got it as soon as it came out and I have to admit.  It is a beautiful mp3 player which I enjoy very much.  I am sad to hear that they will no longer be offering it as a stand alone product which I honestly think it had great potential for success. Great success doesn't happen over night and maybe their decision to pull out of the mp3 player market was to soon, but I honestly think the Zune HD is a great product.   I bigger Zune HD  would have been a huge hit, plus opening it up to developers would have been even a greater hit.  It is to bad they made that decision.  Hopefully the Zune HD 2 will make it's way later on.

    You are mistaking Microsoft for being only a software company. Microsoft is BOTH a hardware and a software company, and has been for quite some time now.

    There have been no press releases stating that the iPod will be discontinued like there has been with the Zune.
