Windows Live Movie Maker Error: 0x87160139

I've just update the newest version 2011 (Build 15.4.3502.0922)

I can't save the movie and the error is 0x87160139

There are yellow triangles in some of the videos but they are all located

I've tried to remove and add videos again

but still the problem is there

ANYONE HELP !!!!!

How can I save my videos ?

·         What is the file format of the movie that you’re trying to publish?

Also, this issue usually happens when a photo or video file that  you added to Windows Movie Maker/Live movie maker was either deleted, moved, or in use by another program. Try closing all other programs when saving the movie in Windows Movie Maker.

Some end users have resolved this issue by saving the movie as “High-definition (720p)” instead “High-definition (1080p)”.

Hi Pamela,

There are several factors that could be contributing to this problem. Please take the following solution one at a time until we fix the problem.  

Ensure you have installed the latest version of Windows Live Movie Maker**:** • http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started. 

 • For Windows Vista - The current 2011 version: 15.4.3555.0308

 • For Windows 7 / 8 - The current 2012 version: 16.4.3503.728

 • Windows Live Movie Maker is not supported on Windows XP

Make sure that the files you are using are of a supported format – Some file formats are not supported by Windows Live Movie Maker. A list of supported formats can be found here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-file-types-faq 

Check if the media files still available or locally saved on your computer. You can find the location of the file and set it manually, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open the project file in Windows Live Movie Maker.
  2. Double-click on the image that is showing the error icon.
  3. Click on Find, locate where the photos are saved.
  4. Open the folder, and then click Open.

Note: When you create a project file it is much better if you can save the source files locally in your computer.

Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.  Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC. 

MediaInfo will be able to identify any issues with missing or faulty codecs and whether it’s already installed in your computer or not. You can get it here. 

Note*: If you can't find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Movie Maker project.*

Ensure that your video card drivers are up to date. Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

  1. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.
  2. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.  If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

    I am running Windows Movie Maker 2012 on Windows 7 x64. Unfortunately, I still get the errors from time to time and I am not able to recover the clips.

    0x87160139  - unable to save project

    0x8007000E - file(s) might be corrupt

    Hardware-wise, the PC is well equipped: 6 core Xeon processor, 24 GB RAM, a 6 GB/s 240GB solid state drive. The system never crashes in and runs very fast and stable for general use.

    I have been using Windows Movie Maker since Windows XP but only ran into this problem after starting to edit 1080 video.  When the 0x87160139 error appears, it usually seems to affect 4 or 5 clips at once. Sometimes it will plague a couple of clips, but then spreads to others near it. Usually I can close my project, wait a minute, then re-open WMM and open the project. Then the clips are OK.

    I do not believe this is a codec problem (for me) because all of my video was shot with the same camera and the problem does not plague all of my clips.  I can throw together a short (30 second or 1 minute) video using the same video clips without any problems.

    Things I've tried to fix the problem:

    1. Install a more power video card (NVidia 210 swapped for NVidia GT 630)
    2. Up date WMM, video card drivers, codecs, Windows Update
    3. Disabling Symantec Endpoint Protection
    4. Moved all of my video clips from a standard hard drive to the SSD to gain faster access times.
    5. Windows System and App logs are free of any obvious errors.
    6. Using the "Fix Clip" option never works. My only option is to delete the clip and re-add and re-trim it.

    Ironically, sometimes one of the yellow triangle clips will still be playable inside the program, even though there is no thumbnail for it on the timeline.

    Because I am currently in the middle of editing a 25 minute program, I have been saving/rendering the unfinished video from time to time in case the whole project craters on me.

    On a semi-related note, for what it's worth, with every version of WMM since Windows XP, I've experienced a problem where, in a finished video, there is a noticeable lag/delay/pause when a new clip/scene starts. I see a still image of the first frame of video for a short time, then the video starts to move and the sound starts.  Also, WMM does not perform well with 1080 video. I have to run a GPU monitoring program (GPU-Z) and keep an eye on that. Once the "Video Engine Load" starts dropping back to a lower percentage, then WMM will become responsive and I can continue editing. I think this is primarily a function of the large amount of data in 1080 video.

    I am about to give up on WMM and learn something else. I guess this product, being free with the OS, is worth pretty much nothing.

    Thanks for the assistance but I will not be providing any log files.  For the last 3 months I have been using Sony Movie Studio Platinum, version 13, which is based on the established Sony Vegas product. This is easy to use, powerful, fast, does not have any bugs, and is relatively low cost (about $80).  It also does much more than Windows Movie Maker, does not choke on 1080 video, does not drop my video files offline, and does not insert a lag/pause/still frame when I cut to a new piece of video like WMM typically does.  And, this is all working fine on the exact same PC that WMM had problems with.

    I'm done with Windows Movie Maker forever. It's sad to see this product take the same direction as Office, Windows 8, and perhaps other Microsoft products. Goodbye.
