Windows Live Movie Maker Error: 0x87160139

I've just update the newest version 2011 (Build 15.4.3502.0922)

I can't save the movie and the error is 0x87160139

There are yellow triangles in some of the videos but they are all located

I've tried to remove and add videos again

but still the problem is there

ANYONE HELP !!!!!

How can I save my videos ?

·         What is the file format of the movie that you’re trying to publish?

Also, this issue usually happens when a photo or video file that  you added to Windows Movie Maker/Live movie maker was either deleted, moved, or in use by another program. Try closing all other programs when saving the movie in Windows Movie Maker.

Some end users have resolved this issue by saving the movie as “High-definition (720p)” instead “High-definition (1080p)”.

Hi Pamela,

There are several factors that could be contributing to this problem. Please take the following solution one at a time until we fix the problem.  

Ensure you have installed the latest version of Windows Live Movie Maker**:** • http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started. 

 • For Windows Vista - The current 2011 version: 15.4.3555.0308

 • For Windows 7 / 8 - The current 2012 version: 16.4.3503.728

 • Windows Live Movie Maker is not supported on Windows XP

Make sure that the files you are using are of a supported format – Some file formats are not supported by Windows Live Movie Maker. A list of supported formats can be found here:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-file-types-faq 

Check if the media files still available or locally saved on your computer. You can find the location of the file and set it manually, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open the project file in Windows Live Movie Maker.
  2. Double-click on the image that is showing the error icon.
  3. Click on Find, locate where the photos are saved.
  4. Open the folder, and then click Open.

Note: When you create a project file it is much better if you can save the source files locally in your computer.

Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.  Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC. 

MediaInfo will be able to identify any issues with missing or faulty codecs and whether it’s already installed in your computer or not. You can get it here. 

Note*: If you can't find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Movie Maker project.*

Ensure that your video card drivers are up to date. Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

  1. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.
  2. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.  If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

    I have Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3505.0912)

     

    Make sure that the files you are using are of a supported format –

    File is an MP4 video file shot on a GoPro HD Hero2 camera. I am able to convert it on one Toshiba laptop, but not on a newer one.

    Check if the media files still available or locally saved on your computer. Y

    File is in C:\Users\user.name\Videos\

     

    Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.  A

    Using the tech support info option in Windows Media Player to output a list of installed codecs on the system (note, this doesn't require a 3rd party download)

    To do this for yourself, click Help > About Windows Media Player > Technical Support Information.

    Please see responses in-line.  Unfortunately none of these issues address the problem.

    As I mentioned I am able to convert these files on another Toshiba Laptop (that one has an NVIDIA card though).  Seems that I've done everything you recommended on this machine so I'd appreciate help in identifying other causes of the issue.

    Same problem here. I am using h.264 format mp4 files. It seems to be a common problem for high def mp4 file editing. I wish microsoft would sort this out!

    me too - it's now 2013 and this is still happening and no fix from Microsoft. They are now offering to convert projects for you if you submit it to skydrive - they promise to get it done in 48 hours. What kind of product is that? Spend weeks working on a movie then, because it doesn't work, send it to Microsoft to have each project fixed by an employee!!!!

    Utterly bizarre.

    I only post this because I experienced the same for the last few weeks and am tired of trying to find a fix as I am sure a lot of folks are.  I don't know if this will work for everyone but so far it is working for me.

    I open my video in Movie Maker (trim it if needed) then immediately save it as is (in whatever format I would normally use at the final production, i.e. Best for this project, High Def, etc.)  To my surprise it works!  Then I ALSO save it as a project.  Next step, continue working with the saved project to add everything else I would normally do.  All other edits, sounds, transitions, credits, whatever.  Save the project again (just in case) and then save the final movie as you normally would. Overwrite the file if you choose to use the same file name as your original simple movie of course. 

    It's working for me.  Good luck! Hopefully MS gets some hints and finds a fix to this!
