Windows 7 Checking For Updates stuck forever

I have installed a legit Windows 7 OS on my laptop. Its not an upgrade, it was a blank hard drive. WIndows 7 installed flawlessly, picked up all my drivers. The only problem is I am having problems with Windows 7 updates. When I choose Windows 7 update, it says "Checking for updates" and stays like that - forever. Even the next day. I did heavy heavy research, found out others are having the same problem. I tried all the fixes I could find, which are listed below:

1. No Anti-virus programs installed yet - brand new Windows 7 ultimate installation
2. There is no spyware - its a brand new clean install
3. Firewall shut off
4. Temp files, cookies, history cleared
5. background intelligent transfer service set to automatic in services.msc
6. software distribution folder renamed
7. tried shutting off automatic updates and doing it manually
8. Added windowsupdate to trust zone
9. ran MicrosoftFixit50202 in normal and advanced mode

Even with my internet SHUT OFF (turned off modem) it still checks for updates and doesn't fail with "No internet connection available".

Please, please help. Anyone.

This issue may occur because there is a lots of pending updates that your PC needs to install.

Here is the 100% SOLUTION!

1.      Delete Temp files (Open Run App > type %temp% > Delete everything that you can skip for those cannot be deleted)

2. Perform Clean boot (Open Run App> type msconfig )

3. Disable Anti-Virus that you have.
4. Download the batch file here:  https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Dos-Command-Line-Batch-to-fb07b159 to reset your Windows update/Background Intelligence Transfer Services.
5. Disable Windows Update ( Open Run App> services.msc > Windows Update > Right Click > Properties > Disable)

6. Disable B.I.T.S**(Run > services.msc >Background Intelligence Transfer Services> Right Click > Properties > Disable)**

7. Restart computer.

8. Enable Windows Update ( Open Run App > services.msc > Windows Update > Right Click > Properties > manual)

9. Download and run (restart if needed after installing)

10.  Stop Windows Update (Open Run App> services.msc > Windows Update > Right Click > Stop)

14.  After installing the KB’s above, restart computer.

15. Check for Updates as usual.

Searching for updates will usually take 5 to 10 minutes for moderate internet connection.

16.  Download and install all the pending updates.

 17. Restart your computer after and check for the updates again and it should appear like this.

Hi guys,

i'm in IT and i have been formatting pcs for ages. Since this problem occurred i have found only 1 solution that works 100% in lots and lots of formats that i've done. I dont't remember where i found it to give the credits to but here it goes.

1. disable autoupdates. restart
2. install KB3102810. restart
3. install KB2533552. restart
4. install WindowsUpdateAgent 7.6. restart

enable auto updates (or whatever suits you) and search for updates. wait a bit and you'll get them all.

i have tried this only on 64 bit versions and on new windows 7 sp1 installations ( home and pro) and works everytime.. I don't know if it works in other situations and as said i didn't find the solution myself. hope it helps

Been tearing my hair out with this one, which seems to suddenly have become a much more common occurrence.

Currently got two laptops on my desk, completely unrelated to each other.

One had a factory reset in August, got Windows 7 with SP1 and managed a couple of updates in August but nothing since. Tried various other items I found on researching the problem, and had left it switched on trying for a couple of very long sessions but no joy. It already had items 3 and 4 in your list. Did 1 and 2, then manual check for updates and in less than ten minutes it had found 242 importants and 10 optionals.

Second one hasn't been reset, but it last managed to check for updates in March 2012. It had a couple of other issues, but after clearing them through was left with this failing to achieve anything on checking for updates. Spent a week trying to sort this one, with a couple of days of continuous checking at one point. Again, it already has items 3 and 4 so just needed 1 and 2. Hey presto, 220 importants and 10 optionals currently in the process of installing.

So very pleased to have found this particular entry at this time!!
