original title: Windows 7 Checking For Updates stuck forever - I know this is answered, but the solutions don't work for me. Please see details!

I have installed a legit Windows 7 OS on my laptop. Its not an upgrade, it was a blank hard drive. WIndows 7 installed flawlessly, picked up all my drivers. The only problem is I am having problems with Windows 7 updates. When I choose Windows 7 update, it says "Checking for updates" and stays like that - forever. Even the next day. I did heavy heavy research, found out others are having the same problem. I tried all the fixes I could find, which are listed below:

  1. No Anti-virus programs installed yet - brand new Windows 7 ultimate installation
  2. There is no spyware - its a brand new clean install
  3. Firewall shut off
  4. Temp files, cookies, history cleared
  5. background intelligent transfer service set to automatic in services.msc
  6. software distribution folder renamed
  7. tried shutting off automatic updates and doing it manually
  8. Added windowsupdate to trust zone
  9. ran MicrosoftFixit50202 in normal and advanced mode

Even with my internet SHUT OFF (turned off modem) it still checks for updates and doesn't fail with "No internet connection available".

Please, please help. Anyone.

Problem solved.

It was my internet connection!! I logged onto my neighbors via wireless unsecured (ssh... don't tell lol), and within 30 seconds, 77 updates came through!

It has to be something in my network.

    1. Did you format the HDD before you did the "new install?"  [YES/NO]

    2a. Have you Activated the current install of Win7 yet? [YES/NO]

    1. Can you successfully update Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) manually via the UPDATE button on MSE's UPDATE tab?  [YES/NO]
    2. Does the behavior persist if you open Internet Explorer (32-bit only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 [ignore any DOES NOT APPLY warnings] & run the Fix It in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes & reboot? [1]
    3. If still no joy, see...

    Open WindowsUpdate.log & scroll to the very bottom/end of the log. Copy the last (bottom-most) 50 lines or so (no more than that) to your clipboard, then paste [CTRL+V] the contents of your clipboard into your next reply as your answer #5.

    
[1] Full Disclosure: Running the Fix It in AGGRESSIVE mode will delete your Update History (if there is any) but not the list of Installed Updates (if there were any).

    Your log tells an interesting tale.

    The first section [1] in the quote box above tells us that an outdated version Windows Update client (WUAUCLT.EXE) had been installed until ~3:53 PM (your local time) today.

    IIRC the currently-installed version (i.e., v7.5.7601.17514) is associated with Windows 7 SP1.

      Q #1 => Is Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB976932) listed in View installed updates?

      Q #2 => Assuming it is, when (exact date/time) was it installed, according to Update History?

    The second section [2] in the quote box above tells us three things:

    1. Three times today you may have declined to install one or more updates when you shutdown (turned-off) your computer;

    1. Automatic Update will attempt to install these updates again at 7:00 AM (local time) tomorrow; and
    2. There may be other updates Automatic Update wants to install but it cannot & will not install them until the update(s) currently in the "queue" are installed [i.e., the update(s) you declined to install today].

      Q #3 => Did you shutdown your computer three times today and do you remember declining a prompt to install one or more updates?

      Q #4 => If you run a manual check for updates right now (cf. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/How-can-I-tell-if-my-computer-is-up-to-date), what, if any, updates are offered (write down the KB numbers, if any, and include them in your reply to this post) AND can you then successfully install them?

    Q: Can you successfully update Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) manually via the UPDATE button on MSE's UPDATE tab?  [YES/NO]

    A: No

    That does not bode well.  :(

      Q #5 => When (exact date/time, preferably) did you do the last clean install?

      Q #6 => When (exact date/time, preferably) did you install MSE?

    1. Yes it is. I installed it manually. 2) It was installed on 6/2/2011, but as far as the time, not sure. 3) Today? It was shut down incorrectly once (by accident, my son). And I was never ever prompted to install an update. It never makes it that far. Only checks for updates 4) No updates are offered. It constantly says "Checking for updates" and never quits. I let it go an entire 24 hours and it still was "Checking for updates". 5) I uninstalled MSE. Just to eliminate any possibilities of that being the problem. I know I am not effected with a virus. I am not your average computer user. I own my own business part time, build computers, etc. Which is why this is **** me off, I never had a problem like this before. Usually its something I can handle. So currently, no A/V programs running. Thanks for helping, your my only hope!
