Did you format the HDD before you did the "new install?" [YES/NO] 2a. Have you Activated the current install of Win7 yet? [YES/NO] cf. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/find-out-32-or-64-bit Can you successfully update Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) manually via the UPDATE button on MSE's UPDATE tab? [YES/NO] Does the behavior persist if you open Internet Explorer (32-bit only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 [ignore any DOES NOT APPLY warnings] & run the Fix It in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes & reboot? [1] If still no joy, see... How to read the WindowsUpdate.log file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 Open WindowsUpdate.log & scroll to the very bottom/end of the log. Copy the last (bottom-most) 50 lines or so (no more than that) to your clipboard, then paste [ CTRL+V ] the contents of your clipboard into your next reply as your answer #5. [1] Full Disclosure: Running the Fix It in AGGRESSIVE mode will delete your Update History (if there is any) but not the list of Installed Updates (if there were any).

Ok, tried all your steps in order. Since its a new install, I didnt have to backup any data. No data was copied over yet since all I did was install a new Windows 7 license, and start the updates, which is why I am so baffled that I may have a virus already. Then I moved to step 1: turning on the firewall. Done. Then #2: Since I didn't install any software, I dont have any anti-virus programs to uninstall. So, I did download Microsoft Security Essentials and installed that. And next, #3, to check for updates. And sure enough, it still checks forever. Still running now. Since your the only one who responded, your my only hope. Please, what else can I do? I now installed other programs since I am "secure", thinking that may trigger it, but no luck. Thanks!

Ok, followed each step. Firewall turned back on, and since there was not any anti virus programs installed yet (I am still baffled that I may have a virus already from a brand new install), and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. And your next step says to check for updates, which I am doing, but yet again, its stuck - checking forever. Anything else please? Since your the only one who responded, you are my only hope. Problem solved.

It was my internet connection!! I logged onto my neighbors via wireless unsecured (ssh... don't tell lol), and within 30 seconds, 77 updates came through!

It has to be something in my network.
