original title: Windows 7 Checking For Updates stuck forever - I know this is answered, but the solutions don't work for me. Please see details!

I have installed a legit Windows 7 OS on my laptop. Its not an upgrade, it was a blank hard drive. WIndows 7 installed flawlessly, picked up all my drivers. The only problem is I am having problems with Windows 7 updates. When I choose Windows 7 update, it says "Checking for updates" and stays like that - forever. Even the next day. I did heavy heavy research, found out others are having the same problem. I tried all the fixes I could find, which are listed below:

  1. No Anti-virus programs installed yet - brand new Windows 7 ultimate installation
  2. There is no spyware - its a brand new clean install
  3. Firewall shut off
  4. Temp files, cookies, history cleared
  5. background intelligent transfer service set to automatic in services.msc
  6. software distribution folder renamed
  7. tried shutting off automatic updates and doing it manually
  8. Added windowsupdate to trust zone
  9. ran MicrosoftFixit50202 in normal and advanced mode

Even with my internet SHUT OFF (turned off modem) it still checks for updates and doesn't fail with "No internet connection available".

Please, please help. Anyone.

Problem solved.

It was my internet connection!! I logged onto my neighbors via wireless unsecured (ssh... don't tell lol), and within 30 seconds, 77 updates came through!

It has to be something in my network.

    Actually, the "newest windows update agent" for a Win7 system (v7.6.7601.19116) would be KB3135445 (02 February 2016).

    Is KB3135445 listed in Installed Updates now?

    Figured out the Win7 SP1 windows update problem and fixed it. Been working on it for a week.

    First set power from control panel to never turn off screen or hard drive,

    installed the newest windows update agent for my system.

    then installed this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821, make sure you choose the right download for your system

    do a shutdown restart after each one

    started window update at 10pm, it ran until 9am the next morning, decided to give up, went to shutdown computer and it said installing 1 of 164 updates. took 3 hours, then went back to win updates ran again, took 20 minutes found another 54 updates.

    Now all is well. Just be patient.

    I went from win7 to win10 and it did not work well on my computer, when I reverted to previous install of win 7 from win 10, several things quit working, like win update and disk defrag. That is what prompted a fresh win7 sp1 install.

    32 bit

    4gig ram

    250gig hard drive

    I always stay up to date with windows and drivers etc.

    This was a nightmare

    I had exactly the same problem - see my solution at Windows Update remains at "Checking For Updates" indefinitely...
