This site really helped to solve the problem. Have fighted this problem many times. Usually waiting for 12-24 hours may solve but with these instruction you can get results almost in real-time.

This fixed it!!!! SPREAD THE WORD. I've been struggling with Windows Updates being stuck on "checking for updates" forever now. This is the only solution that worked for me. I just found it today and confirmed it worked on a newly installed Windows 7 machine which was stuck all weekend "checking for updates". http://wu.krelay.de/en/

My daughter's laptop hadn't updated, hadn't even checked for updates since March 18, 2014 and following your instructions, it's now in the process of downloading and installing 190 updates!

Problem solved.

It was my internet connection!! I logged onto my neighbors via wireless unsecured (ssh... don't tell lol), and within 30 seconds, 77 updates came through!

It has to be something in my network.
