I think creating a thread with exactly the same symptoms actually causes confusion. Have just had the experience with two threads, same content. The first one found a solution, but it took a while before the second thread realised that a solution was found

Problem solved.

It was my internet connection!! I logged onto my neighbors via wireless unsecured (ssh... don't tell lol), and within 30 seconds, 77 updates came through!

It has to be something in my network.
