original title: Windows 7 Checking For Updates stuck forever - I know this is answered, but the solutions don't work for me. Please see details!

I have installed a legit Windows 7 OS on my laptop. Its not an upgrade, it was a blank hard drive. WIndows 7 installed flawlessly, picked up all my drivers. The only problem is I am having problems with Windows 7 updates. When I choose Windows 7 update, it says "Checking for updates" and stays like that - forever. Even the next day. I did heavy heavy research, found out others are having the same problem. I tried all the fixes I could find, which are listed below:

  1. No Anti-virus programs installed yet - brand new Windows 7 ultimate installation
  2. There is no spyware - its a brand new clean install
  3. Firewall shut off
  4. Temp files, cookies, history cleared
  5. background intelligent transfer service set to automatic in services.msc
  6. software distribution folder renamed
  7. tried shutting off automatic updates and doing it manually
  8. Added windowsupdate to trust zone
  9. ran MicrosoftFixit50202 in normal and advanced mode

Even with my internet SHUT OFF (turned off modem) it still checks for updates and doesn't fail with "No internet connection available".

Please, please help. Anyone.

Problem solved.

It was my internet connection!! I logged onto my neighbors via wireless unsecured (ssh... don't tell lol), and within 30 seconds, 77 updates came through!

It has to be something in my network.

    Jansmith1962, thank you for your intelligent and helpful input, PA bear, in reply to your post, first and foremost this thread has everything to do with Windows 10 upgrade, and the reason? Well I'll leave you to work that one out as you are obviously more intelligent than the rest of us! That's called sarcasm (in case you don't know) secondly you are right I'm not a Windows engineer, I updated my profile last night after a few beers and quite tired. I am in fact a computer engineer, for your benefit, that's someone who builds and maintains computers. Third and final, I am a member of this community to help and contribute to people having problems with their computers. I'm not suggesting my information is the correct fix to apply to every ptoblem, but I try to help as much as I can as I have on depth knowledge of computers. It is in my nature to HELP people NOT to attack people. I suggest if you don't have any positive input then you don't input. Thank you

    Dear PA Bear MS MVP..

    You'r completely right.

    The thread itself has nothing to do with upgrading to Win10

    But the recent increasing problems especially on non functional windows update after a fresh install of win7 DO point to the release of Win10.

    As i said; a changed state of the windows update servers. 

    Or maybe some bits have falling of the win7 install disks with many people?

    These (re)installs néver had such problems with WUpdate as they do now..

    PS: What's a MS MVP (i hope that MS does not stand for Microsoft)

    Why be so disrespectfull as somebody writes he or she is a windows engineer..

    Just to be clear in 15 years of system admin i NEVER had any usable support and/or input from any Microsoft official and/or "certified" person.

    so leave persons in there value. That's in expression we use here in The Netherlands.

    PS2: if this thread is 4 1/2 years old i ask myself why Microsoft isn't solving this increasing issue.

    This is absolutely to do with the windows 10 upgrade!! Microsoft want people to run Windows 10!! They will have a prime interest in local oem's
