Windows Update Failure Error Code 9C48 Unable to Fix.

I guess persistence is the key as I do NOT expect this to be fixed on Microsoft side, I mean why should they, it's a only a failure from windows update.

After the last fail, I uninstalled IE 9, rebooted, went back to the ie9 offline install I had and ran it again at the command prompt with the update-no switch and this time it worked, after the install and another reboot I went back to windows update and needed to force a check for new updates and sure enough there were about 9 of them, one of which was KB3065822 which is an update to IE9 so I know that this particular install is up to date and getting the patches as it should.

I have now lost count how many times I have been able to re-create the situation, but certainly enough times that ANY microsoft engineer could also, and as I stated above, I have recreated it on three different models of servers, multiple times each, and two different generations. (1750, 1950, 2950) Raid and non-raid. All with the latest bios, backplane and esm firmwares etc...

So if you happen to land on this page researching this IE 9 install error code 9C48, stay calm, do not throw the server out the third floor window (although if you really must, please video it and contact me so I can view it for entertainment).

Just try installing it again, if it gives you the same error, look for the offline install at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-9-details.aspx (watch the radio buttons it will try to give you IE11 or other version) and then run the install from the command prompt with the /update-no switch.

If that doesn't work, please put the gun away, and try the process over again. As I posted above I was able to do an install or two yesterday without issue (once I determined what would work) but then today I started down the whole frustrating path again, and I was really starting to think there was a conspiracy building around my ip address....lol

I set the sledge off to the side and tried again and it worked the third or fourth time. Always remember to reboot between each step.

I find it quite interesting that all of a sudden today, IE will no longer install using that switch.

I also find it interesting that today's install on a different 1750 had 163 updates waiting for it instead of the 161 that were there yesterday....using the same install media I might add.

I had the IE9 exe a few different places and they all produce the same result today, I get a warning it will NOT install without being given access to the web to get an update in order to install, when for about 20 or 30 attempts prior to today it would always fail when being given access to the web.

The only thing different with today's install, this one has raid, a perc 4 (many of my 1950 and 2950 had raid cards also, perc 5's and perc 6's) and i installed dns in advance of finishing the updates.

I have no clue what happened but it appears I am right back in to the same damn loop again, IE reports that it is already version 9 and yet windows update is providing me an 18 MB download of the IE9 install and it fails returning with error 9C48.

I already jumped through all the hoops in previous days running all the fixit's and all the other BS that does not work so I have no plans on wasting my time with that list of failures.

Of course I can not install the offline version, since setup claims I have a newer version installed than the downloaded version, and if that were HONESTLY true, then why is windows update trying to give me the same damn version?

This has now happened with more than 5 fresh installs.

Microsoft, what did you screw up with windows update when it concerns Server 2008 (NON R2)

I recreated the entire situation on a Dell Poweredge 1750 with a brand spanking new install of Windows Server Standard 2008 x86. (all version of 2008 have produced similar results on different hardware)

Immediately upon finishing the install of windows and Open Manage, I ran windows updates.

There were 161 updates and I took them all, I think the only update not selected was .Net 4.51

The IE9 update failed as i expected.

Nothing would allow the update to run, EXCEPT downloading and running IE off line install and ONLY when using the /update-no switch. (IE9-WindowsVista-x86-enu)

Immediately upon installing IE 9, I went back to windows update and got 8 or 9 more updates, one of them being KB3065822 which was never offered to me before the successful completion of IE9.

If you refer to some of the forum threads about this issue, both here at microsoft as well as the Dell forums, you can see that in some instances folks were getting IE to sort of install and IE About would even report that it was version 9, which in a few of my test scenarios that happened to me, but in NO CASE was I ever offer the KB3065822 until after I ran the IE 9 install with the no update switch.

That will NEVER work on a Dell Server if you want to run Open Manage since although I have heard some have managed to make FireFox work with it, you need IE to mange servers with Open Manage...

I actually managed to get the update to run and install fine by using the offline install with a switch /update-no

Immediately after the install and reboot going back to Windows Update provided me additional security patches so I knew all was fine.

This pretty much proves that the active update during the live install process has a problem...likely only in certain situations. Maybe it is a certain update that if installed before IE9 is installed it causes this, but I am happy to at least have gotten it figured out as I am doing a lot of testing on 2008 in different situations so I am not more comfortable I can get past this pesky error on a fresh install.

I have just today installed a fresh copy of 2008 x86 on a test server and am currently running all updates. If IE fails as I suspect it will, I will immediately try the offline install with the /update-no to verify this was the surefire fix but after trying so many things in recent days, and keeping notes rebooting between each step etc, it does look like a fix to whatever issue was the root cause for many.

I doubt hardware has anything to do with it but I recreated the issue on Poweredge 2950's and a 2900, and am now giving it a go on a 1750
