BITS is what downloads the update. When the signature of the update is checked by your system to determine if it's legitimate, your system is failing to verify (trust) it, which results in the return code of 0x800b0109.

I believe that all of this is being caused by NSS and/or the replacement of McAfee with NSS. 

In regards to the NSS and native Windows 7 firewall you posted  - "  these settings are being manager by a vendor application norton firewall provider "

That means the NSS firewall service has NOT BEEN DISABLED as it is managing the Win7 firewall.

Don't be so concerned about the firewall "protecting" the system, one is On ... you need to be more concerned with the fact that the firewall is preventing the computer from downloading Critical Security updates. Either it's hosed BITS or is preventing it from working correctly.

The updating issues on your computer is stemming from the downloading of the updates because your system is not trusting them.

Plus, to add another factor to the equation, the Windows Update Agent is not updating to the latest release.

Whether the system can update or not, undo the clean boot steps that you previously did and restart to normal Windows mode...

HOW DO I DO THIS? PLEASE BE DETAILED. I HAVE TWO ICONS ON MY DESKTOP THAT WERE INSTALLED PER YOU: MICROSOFTFIXIT50202 AND MCPR(MCAFEE). BY UNDOING WHAT YOU TOLD ME TO WILL IT REMOVE THESE? I WANT TO REMOVE ANYTHING I CAN THAT YOU DO NOT THINK I NEED. HOW DO I UNDO THE CLEAN BOOT STEPS AND HAVE NORMAL? PLEASE ADVISE.

Did you follow the steps on this page to Clean boot the system ? - How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Then use those same steps to undo the Clean boot.

It sounds to me as if you did not Clean boot the system as "some thing" is interfering with the Trusting of the updates and their downloads.

You can delete MCPR.exe, save the Fixit for now.

Suggest you try a manual installation of one of the updates to confirm the issue is with the download, not the installation of the updates -

Update for Windows 7 (KB976902)

Click that link and save the update. When the download completes close all open windows.

Install Windows6.1-KB976902-x86.msu the same way you would an .exe file, double left click on it.

1. What anti-virus application or security suite was installed BEFORE you installed your first Comcast freebie (McAfee Security Center) & was your subscription still current?... THE VIRUS SOFTWARE ORIGINALLY ON THE COMPUTER WHEN I BOUGHT IT(TOSHIBA) WAS NORTON INTERNET SECURITY.  WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY IS MY SUBSCRIPTION STILL CURRENT?  PLEASE BE MORE DETAILED AND EXPLAIN HOW I WOULD FIND THIS OUT.
2. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)... YES IT DID, SEE ABOVE.  BUT I'M PRETTY SURE WHEN I INSTALLED MY FIRST COMCAST FREEBIE IT MADE ME REMOVE THAT ONE THAT WAS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED BEFORE I COULD INSTALL THE ORIGINAL MCAFEE FROM COMCAST.  I NOW USE NORTON, WHICH COMCAST SWITCHED TO.  SEE PREVIOUS POST ANSWERS TO MOWGREEN ABOVE.

3. Are ANY of the following updates listed in Installed Updates (not Update History)? => KB2360131, KB218346, KB981852 & KB2436673... THE ONLY ONES THAT ARE LISTED AS SUCCEFULLY INSTALLED IN THE LAST 5 DAYS ARE:  KB2477244, KB890830 AND KB915597

I JUST GOT A NEW ERROR CODE WHEN TRYING TO INSTALL THE UPDATES: 800B0109 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN NOW??? :(

My esteemed colleague MowGreen's last reply notwithstanding, try the following:

Norton and McAfee applications are notorious for not upgrading (or uninstalling) cleanly.

[You will want to print these instructions for offline reference. If a Step says to reboot, reboot.]

1a. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:  ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english\_us\_canada/removal\_tools/Norton\_Removal\_Tool.exe

1b. Download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).
3. Uninstall  Norton Security Center (including LiveUpdate and any Norton Add-ons) viaControl Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel | Programs and Features, if using Classic view).
4. IMPORTANT! => Enable the Windows Firewall immediately after rebooting.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below!

5a. Right-click on the file you saved in Step #1a above and select Run as Administrator.  Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.

5b. Right-click on the file you saved in Step #1b above and select Run as Administrator.  Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot again. [Note: If you've already run the McAfee removal tool, run it again anyway.]

6. Do a clean install of the Comcrap/Norton freebie:  http://security.comcast.net/norton/resi/migrate/default.htm?cid=33_232 

NOTE: Do NOT enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet.

=> OPTIONAL/RECOMMENDED: Better yet, download/install the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) instead => http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx

7. Manually and repeatedly update Norton Security Suite (or MSE) until you get a "no more updates" or similar prompt.
8. Reset IE8 Advanced settings per http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Reset-Internet-Explorer-settings
9. Open IE8 (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 [ignore APPLIES TO section] & run the Fix It in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [1]
10. Reboot one last time & test by running a manual check for updates per...

i have done everything up until step 3.  when i try to remove this program from my program list it gives me an error and says the file cannot be properly validated.  it then gives me a comcast link to click on for tech support with these directions:

i do this, however, it will NOT let me delete the following two, consequently, NOT allowing me to remove my current NSS software:

E011.temp... this action cannot be completed because the file is open in adobe flas player installer/uninstaller 10.1 r85 

FXSAPIDebugLogFile... this action cannot be completed becasue the file is open in windows explorer

I have no idea what this means.  i dont have any adobe open and i closed out everything, all icons and explorer websites and tried to delete these again and it gave me the same error.  i cannot proceed until i figure out why i can't delete these and uninsall NSS.  any ideas???  thanks.
