Error code 800B010A or 0x800B010A

I cannot update my windows with the automatic updates it alerts me of.  When i try to it gives me the error code 800B010A or sometimes 0x800B010A; what does this mean?  I tried to have windows fix it but it wouldn't work.  I noticed a lot of the updates it needs to do(9) have to do with security, which worries me if i am not protected with ms security updates.  I also cannot run windows defender and the icon in the bottom right showing my signal strenth for my wireless connection has all empty bars with a big red X going through it but for some reason i have no problem getting online.  i called one of those online geek squad people and before he charged me i told him what the problems were and he thinks it is a glitch in the windows 7 OS.  he didn't think it was a virus since i dont have any problems with my computer, i have virus protection and these are not common things a virus attacks.  he told me the only way to fix this would be to do a factory restore but i would lose everything and have to start over like my computer just came out of the box.  i dont mind doing this if it will help secure longevity on this computer as i just got it a little over a year ago but would prefer not to if i dont have to.  any ideas of why this is happening and how i can fix it???  thanks!

ok i finally did all of the steps above you asked me to pa bear and it still does NOT update these windows updates... now what??? :(  this is getting ridiculous!!! :(

    NO, you don't need to backup anything as you state that you already have.

    NO, a virus will not survive when Windows is installed cleanly ( the Hard Drive will be formatted ).

    The only malware that can survive a clean installation would be one that infected the Master Boot Record (MBR).

    It's very difficult for a malware to compromise the MBR in Windows 7.

    AFAIK, it's impossible for it to do so when one is running in a Standard User account.

     IF you create a Standard User account you greatly reduce the odds that any malware will compromise your computer.

    ok great thanks.  i beleive i am ready to re-install windows now.  i think i will do it tonight while i watch the red wings game.  i will keep you both updated.  thanks again for all your help.

    so i went to re-install window and after navigating through after pressing F8 i got to a screen where i had to make a selection.  there was no option that said "re-install windwos."  the only thing remotely that seemed to match this was an option called "toshiba recovery wizard."  when i clicked on this it said in big letters WARNING, selecting this option will make you lose all data and something to that effect but it didn't actually say it was going to re-install windows.  is this the option i want to select and follow the instructions to re-install windows?  if not, what am i looking for as nothing says re-install windows?  i just want to make sure i do the righ tthing so i don't screw something up and have a bigger problem.  please advise... thanks

    Yes, and you should recall the following in my post above (timestamp: Monday, January 31, 2011 12:31 AM)...

    Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100% trustworthy at this point) then...do a clean install of Windows. [emphasis added]

    At the very least, you'll want to back up your IE Favorites, My Documents folder, any music libraries (e.g., iTunes), Mail Client data (e.g., Outlook; Windows Live Mail), and account usernames & passwords. Any programs that did not come preinstalled on your computer when you bought will need to be reinstalled from scratch so start rounding up the disks you used to install them. If you purchased a program online, you'll need your key or license number so you can download it again without paying for it again.
