Error code 800B010A or 0x800B010A

I cannot update my windows with the automatic updates it alerts me of.  When i try to it gives me the error code 800B010A or sometimes 0x800B010A; what does this mean?  I tried to have windows fix it but it wouldn't work.  I noticed a lot of the updates it needs to do(9) have to do with security, which worries me if i am not protected with ms security updates.  I also cannot run windows defender and the icon in the bottom right showing my signal strenth for my wireless connection has all empty bars with a big red X going through it but for some reason i have no problem getting online.  i called one of those online geek squad people and before he charged me i told him what the problems were and he thinks it is a glitch in the windows 7 OS.  he didn't think it was a virus since i dont have any problems with my computer, i have virus protection and these are not common things a virus attacks.  he told me the only way to fix this would be to do a factory restore but i would lose everything and have to start over like my computer just came out of the box.  i dont mind doing this if it will help secure longevity on this computer as i just got it a little over a year ago but would prefer not to if i dont have to.  any ideas of why this is happening and how i can fix it???  thanks!

ok i finally did all of the steps above you asked me to pa bear and it still does NOT update these windows updates... now what??? :(  this is getting ridiculous!!! :(

    What is the installed antivirus or Security Suite; is it's subscription current; was anything detected the last time the system was scanned with it ?

    Suggest you first see if a proxy server is causing the error.

    From - You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

    Windows 7 To remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Search programs and files field.
    2. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

    Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue. 3. Type the following command and then press Enter:

    netsh winhttp show proxy

      Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window. 4. If a proxy is showing, to remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

    netsh winhttp reset proxyThen type exit , press Enter to close the Command Prompt.

    thanks.  i have norton security suite through comcast.  i run it at least 3 times a day- full system scan.  nothing has ever been detected, or if it has, not in awhile and it was quarantined and fixed.  everytime i run a scan it says issues that were detected and fixed were just cookies.

    i did what you told me to and when i typed that it it said Direct Access <no proxy server>.  what does that mean?  is there anything else i can do to fix this problem or what should i do?  thanks again.

    Windows Defender is disabled because Comcast's version of Norton Security Suite (NSS) includes an antispyware component. It was supposed to disable Windows Defender when it installed and it appears that it has.

    0x800B010A - A certificate chain could not be built to a trusted root authority

    This error occurs if the certificate chain response contains an end entity certificate but not the complete certificate chain to a root CA.

    Direct Access <no proxy server> means that a proxy server is not redirecting your computer's network activity through a proxy. Some antivirus softwares use a proxy server to scan incoming email.

    1. What was the antivirus/security suite used before you installed NSS ?

    2. Has this updating issue occured previously or did it just start occurring ?

    1. Is NSS scanning your incoming email ? Although no proxy is showing, this may be where the issue is stemming from.
    2. Are you using the NSS firewall or the one that is included in Windows 7 ?

    BTW, StevieY was a great player for the Red Wings ! Too bad he's the GM of Tampa instead of for the Wings. <w>

    thanks!  so i shouldn't be worried that windowns defender doesn't work?

    0x800B010A... so should i be worried about this error code?  can it potentially make my system crash?  how can i fix it?  what about the status bar showing i have no internet connection but i am still connected?  same question??

    1. i beleive comcast had mccafee before it switched to norton but i had to uninstall it and im pretty sure remove the program and delete it in order to install nss.
    2. the first thing to start was the internet connection started showing no signal with a big red X through it but i am still able to get on the internet about a month ago and this updating issue started a few days ago when i got a notification that they failed to install but when i looked it said they failed about a month ago when they originally tried to install, which was right around the same time as the big red X in the internet connection, however i could still access internet no problem.
    3. i have no idea but i don't think so.  how would i be able to find this out?
    4. yes, it says nss firewall is on and this is what it says for windows:  windows firewall is on, inbound connectioins that do not match a rule are blocked.  these settings are being manager by a vendor application norton firewall provider... what does this mean???

    i was born and raised watching stevie y.  it was a sad day for me when he retired but even sadder to be at joe louis arena listening to his speech and watching them raise his #19 to the rafters.
