Error code 800B010A or 0x800B010A

I cannot update my windows with the automatic updates it alerts me of.  When i try to it gives me the error code 800B010A or sometimes 0x800B010A; what does this mean?  I tried to have windows fix it but it wouldn't work.  I noticed a lot of the updates it needs to do(9) have to do with security, which worries me if i am not protected with ms security updates.  I also cannot run windows defender and the icon in the bottom right showing my signal strenth for my wireless connection has all empty bars with a big red X going through it but for some reason i have no problem getting online.  i called one of those online geek squad people and before he charged me i told him what the problems were and he thinks it is a glitch in the windows 7 OS.  he didn't think it was a virus since i dont have any problems with my computer, i have virus protection and these are not common things a virus attacks.  he told me the only way to fix this would be to do a factory restore but i would lose everything and have to start over like my computer just came out of the box.  i dont mind doing this if it will help secure longevity on this computer as i just got it a little over a year ago but would prefer not to if i dont have to.  any ideas of why this is happening and how i can fix it???  thanks!

ok i finally did all of the steps above you asked me to pa bear and it still does NOT update these windows updates... now what??? :(  this is getting ridiculous!!! :(

    so even after i re-install windows i want to load all of the data from the dvd that i make back on my computer?  what exactly is it moving back?  i thought once i re-install windows everything will be lost?  also, why do i need to make two accounts?  why can't i just do everything from one?  thanks

    To access Repair your computer you need to click Shutdown, then Restart. Hold the F8 key down prior to Windows loading.

    If Windows starts to load you did not press the F8 key in time. Wait until Windows loads fully and then shut down/restart again.

    When you press the F8 key in time you'll see a Boot Menu.

    At the very top, towards the left is Repair your computer.

    Repair you computer is how you access the hidden partition that Toshiba provides.

    This is what you'll see when you access Repair your computer except that there will be another option at the very bottom after Command Prompt that Toshiba installed. That Toshiba option will allow you to do a Clean reinstallation of Windows 7 - What are the system recovery options inWindows 7?

    I have no idea how long it will take to do a Clean installation of Windows 7 using the Toshiba hidden partition.

    You'll know if it worked or not after Windows 7 is installed and your back on the Desktop with a new User account.

    Right after Windows 7 is installed, create another User account for day to to use of the computer (especially, surfing the internet).

    Do not give this User account Administrator privileges, rather, make it a Standard User account, which it is what it will be set to by Default.

    Give both accounts passwords, please.

    Now when you boot the computer there will be 2 User accounts showing, the Admin account and the Standard User account.

    Log on with the Admin account and uninstall any antivirus software supplied by Toshiba as  the first thing you do.

    Restart, and then log on with the Admin account once more.

    Open Windows Update in Control Panel by clicking the Start orb.

    In the Search programs and files field type in up, under Programs, click Windows Update.

    Click the Change settings link in the left frame.

    Under 'Who can install updates', put a mark next to ' Allow all users to install updates on this computer'.

    Click the Save button.

    You can now log off of the Admin account ( Start, click the right arrow next to Shutdown, choose Log off) and use the Standard User account to install the updates that will be offered. Or you can remain logged on with the Admin account if you so wish.

    Install all of the updates first but, do NOT install them all at once, please. Do them in groups of 10 so that if one update causes an issue, you will not have to uninstall all them to find out which one is causing the issues(s).

    After all of the updates are installed with the required restarts being done, then install MSE.

    You are then good to go, steveyzerman19.

    Reinstall your programs and applications that are not contained in the hidden Toshiba partition and then move all of your personal data back.

    NOTE: Be sure to do a scan of the DVD with MSE prior to moving the data back, just to be on the safe side.

    There's no use doing a clean install of an OS if the data you intend to restore contains something that will compromise the OS.

    thanks.  i was going to do it tonight while i wated the superbowl but when i started i noticed my back up cd was not a dvd so now i have to go get one tomorrow.  so you are saying that i should use microsoft security essentials as my free virus and spyware software and NOT the free comcast norton, right?  is that link you provided me above for a free instalation?  also, since i am not tech computer savy, when i press f8 to re-install windows are the directions easy to follow in order to do it?  how do i know if it worked or did not work?  how long does it take to do it?  thanks.

    i'm really not interested in getting to know windows 7, just interested in it working properly.  so you are saying that i can go ahead now and follow the directions you gave me above to re-install windows because everything i need to do it is already on my computer, correct?  thanks.
