Error code 800B010A or 0x800B010A

I cannot update my windows with the automatic updates it alerts me of.  When i try to it gives me the error code 800B010A or sometimes 0x800B010A; what does this mean?  I tried to have windows fix it but it wouldn't work.  I noticed a lot of the updates it needs to do(9) have to do with security, which worries me if i am not protected with ms security updates.  I also cannot run windows defender and the icon in the bottom right showing my signal strenth for my wireless connection has all empty bars with a big red X going through it but for some reason i have no problem getting online.  i called one of those online geek squad people and before he charged me i told him what the problems were and he thinks it is a glitch in the windows 7 OS.  he didn't think it was a virus since i dont have any problems with my computer, i have virus protection and these are not common things a virus attacks.  he told me the only way to fix this would be to do a factory restore but i would lose everything and have to start over like my computer just came out of the box.  i dont mind doing this if it will help secure longevity on this computer as i just got it a little over a year ago but would prefer not to if i dont have to.  any ideas of why this is happening and how i can fix it???  thanks!

ok i finally did all of the steps above you asked me to pa bear and it still does NOT update these windows updates... now what??? :(  this is getting ridiculous!!! :(

    ok, yeah i had a computer break on me a couple years ago and i lost everything so i never really put much on this computer that i wanted to save and everything i did, i saved to my flash drive.  so if i have everything that i want saved on a flash drive(pics, documents, etc) that i can just pull up from the drive after re-installing windows then i don't need to make a dvd backup/sytem revocery disc like you mentioned a few posts above and i can just go ahead and reinstall windows without the disc right?  that was the only part confusing me.  i just didn't know what the purpose of that dvd disc was for and if i really needed it.  also, if i do have a virus will reinstalling windows erase this and i won't have any viruses or spyware anymore, if i do currently?  thanks

    This is why you should create a Standard User account to use for surfing the internet. I posted it once already for a reason, not to just waste electrons -

    Using a Standard User account greatly reduces the risk of the computer ever being compromised.

    I don't know what your personal data is ... it may be pictures, music, or anything else that you want to preseve and move back to the reinstalled system.

    If you don't have any personal data that you want to keep, then forget about it and just reinstall Windows.

    If, after doing the clean install, you find that a Norton free-trial was reinstalled, uninstall the free-trial & then run the Norton removal tool. If a McAfee free-trial was reinstalled, uninstall that free-trial & then run the McAfee removal tool.

    also, should i do both of these just in case like pa bear said to make sure ALL installed anti viruses are off once i re-install windows and then just delete the icons from my dekstop:

    1a. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:  ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english\_us\_canada/removal\_tools/Norton\_Removal\_Tool.exe
