Windows 7 Troubleshooter Error 0x8E5E0247

I am having problems with the Troubleshooter in Windows 7 64-bit . Any time I try to use it to fix anything, I get the error message "An error occurred while troubleshooting: A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting." I rebooted in safe mode and the same error occurs. It also always fails the same way trying to run Program Compatibility. Error message:

Path: c:\windows\diagnostics\system\PCW

Error Code: 0x8E5E0247

Any help would be appreciated.

I finally was able to solve this problem. I found the answer on another forum and it solved the problem as well.

The error was caused by the Intel Rapid Storage Technology program that comes with my Toshiba laptop.

I guess the old driver didn't like the new 640gb hard drive I installed. Maybe it was only designed for up to 500gb (this is my old hard drive size that worked fine).

The Intel Rapid Storage Technology program was shown in the taskbar notifications with a yellow exclamation point.

As soon as I updated this driver to the latest from the Intel website, Windows Update and everything else worked.

Hope this helps everyone else having the same problem.

Ok, 2.5yrs later, but Glenn24 ... if you're still out there, your blog saved my life! After 2 days of going thru technology ****, I finally sussed out everything. I have Windows 7 Home Premium on my Toshiba Satellite Laptop C660 and almost totally ran out of HDD space (320GB).

I decided to replace my Sata HDD with a 750GB one. That's when I ran into similar problems to you. Windows Search no longer worked. Nor did Windows Indexing or Windows Update. And I couldnt troubleshoot anything (not that Windows trouble shooting ever helps that much anyway! ;)) All the basic things didn't seem to work. I even tried doing a SP1 reinstall which kicked up a stink (eventually - 4 hrs later) because it said hardware changes stopped SP1 from successfully reinstalling - SP1 was installed when I bought my 64-bit W7 laptop.

Then I did some research on Intel Rapid Storage Technology for my laptop, downloaded drivers like you said, and somehow after much grief, everything came top life again.

In a very long-winded way, your short blog led me to a solution and I now have a happily running (thus far!) Toshiba Satellite C660-115 with a 750GB Sata drive in it!

I was on point of nervous breakdown, when i read your above solution,having tried all other possible solution. It makes sense and it WORKS for me,all it took few minutes,windows update ok now

Hey Glenn, I have a toshiba that the hard drive crashed I also upgraded but to a Western Digital 750 Gb hard drive.

I of course can't get on the internet with that computer so I have downloaded driver updates from toshiba for the network and display/sound. Doesn't work. I didn't follow your answer to well, my bad. Which driver did you update? I checked the device manager and it says the new hard drive is fine but the display adapters/network adapters/ and sound controllers all have the yellow triangle with exclamation. Thanks for any help. Noel
