What you say is right. However, don't forget unresolved problems with system devices and users messing with service settings all contribute to a slow start up.

This absolutely untrue.  I have  many Windows 7 systems and have had them since the operating system has come out and many programs have been installed and uninstalled with no effect on the speed of the computer. An no registry cleaning has been or needed to be done.

The registry being "a mess," as he calls it, doesn't affect
performance. Since registry access is random, having unused registry
entries doesn't really hurt you.

I'm sure I've mentioned iton this thread already, but -

My Win7 install goes back to 2010.  It was imaged from my old machine which had different hardware

(AMD cpu / Nvidia gpu  > Intel cpu / AMD gpu - something rarely done successfully with XP )  on

Dec 2013 (obviously with due care to make sure all drivers were fully removed, and things such as

Anti-virus uninstalled first ).

The original machine also had the OS imaged to an SSD, and it's still on the original four year old

Win7 install (no registry 'cleans' ).

There is no discernible performance difference since first installing Windows in 2010 on either machine.

• OK I did go through the registry and manually delete some stuff in relation to the old motherboard

and graphics card drivers/software as a precaution, but this in not the same as running a registry

cleaner and  allowing it to do as it pleases with the registry.

• I've also suggested this - Registry cleaners are pitched at the casual PC user, not the enthusiast,

but it's the casual user who is more likely to have something borked by a registry cleaner as they

don't bother reading that long list of entries and wouldn't know what 99% of them do anyway.

While doing a registry backup should something go wrong after a 'clean' may sound fine in theory

it is only good for a short period of time as the registry gets added to with subsequent installs/uninstalls, and problems created by a bad 'clean' may not manifest early enough for

the backup to remain viable.
