So based on this article this so called expert admitted windows registry leaves orphaned keys behind, and removing will fragment registry like it does a hard drive. Since most of us know that registry problems occur from large amounts of unwanted data, we know that those orphaned keys need to be removed. I find it hard to believe that it only speeds up a user search of the registry only. If it has noticeable speed improvement for a user search what do you think it does for windows when it has to search the registry? Again I say apply a little common sense here. The more bloat, or orphaned keys, there is the longer it takes Windows to search through it. Yes, but that is why it has a backup feature so you can restore the missing keys. If you are that worried about causing harm to your computer, then you probably do not need a computer. Installing software can be harmful. I think this is the reason you make backups. Believe they work, or don't. It is all just someone's opinion. I base my opinion on the fact that when my computer starts running sluggish I can clean the registry and it fixes it, and yes 3 different anti virus programs give it a clean bill of health.

That's right - Specific entries and with full knowledge of what those keys do. Just being honest.

However, that does not contradict stating that registry 'cleaners' have been known to bork a system, or

specific programs, particularly when doing a deep scan, and particularly for those with no idea of what the registry cleaner may be removing, and no interest in what it may be removing.

So while registry cleaners may target casual users they are really better suited to power users,

if useful at all.

It is safer for a casual user to leave the registry alone as 'cleaning' out old entries will  save at best a second or so on modern machines using Win7. Something most casual users will not notice.

The registry itself takes very little time compared to scanning a users software and files.

The other anti reg cleaner software argument stems from those threads that pop up frequently

enough from casual users who have been tricked into a 'free' scan and end up with a software they

have difficulty removing, and which keeps pestering them to buy the full version to fix all the problems

it has found.

In these instances these 'system optimiser' programs are nothing more than spyware/malware,

and a scam preying on the unsuspecting.

People like my sister-in-law, an avowed technophobe who's mantra is "I just want it to work",

but makes no effort to learn  basics such as Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

So, as these forums are heavily populated by casual users, most of those who contribute will warn

people off reg cleaner/system optimising programs as the safer option.

So it is fair to say then that sometimes there is a error in the registry correct. Yes registry can mess up the registry, but if you made a backup like the registry cleaner suggest then restoring is just a simple click. You are right it may be more suited for power user, but people ask the questions to learn just like in this post. It is funny that you would assume this person is a I only want it to work and heard I need to do this. How do you know that this person just doesn't want to be a victim to the free scan and pay to fix scam? It is sad to say but if a person doesn't take time to get that opinion on what ones are good and bad, and just buy one period, will be none the wiser as to what happend. Everyone is prey to scams. It is those who are smart enough to question, and  ask questions, that will avoid being taken advantage of. You are probably right most people will not notice any speed increase. I do because I install and uninstall lots of stuff. I try things, I even try breaking my computer so I can fix it. That way I know how to fix those problems, and can help others with there problems. It goes without saying I am far from an average user, and I've had no problems with cleaning my registry.

           

For those wanting a reg cleaner I use revo uninstaller pro to uninstall all programs, and have it remove any leftovers from install. Then once every 3 months or so I remove all junk files from system and use ccleaner. Good luck

What you don't seem to understand is this. Orphaned entries in the Registry have little or no impact whatsoever on machine performance. There's absolutely no need to use any sort of cleaner, automated or not.

This is where I don't understand you guys. You just stated that there is little to no impact onachine performance. Everything you do to your computer effects performance. Even Windows has features to turn off for best performance, programs turn off aero theme for performance. While modern machines can handle it, it still has an impact. Look at it this way if you put client files into a file cabinet (registry) and you only remove part of that file when you no longer have that client. Over time you file cabinet becomes full. Now you have to get another file cabinet (registry expands). Over time you have a warehouse full of file cabinets, and need to find file on Mr. Smith. While you may know exactly where that cabinet is located, you still have to walk through that warehouse and then look through the files. Now imagine those old files (orphaned keys) were cleaned out once a month. You now have your files in a small room in back of your office. Do you think you could find it faster? Or better yet if you got 30 keys on a key ring and only one opens the door, do you leave them there because they are not hurting anything? Think about this. Those orphaned keys causes your PC to use more processing power, however small it may be, means increased load on CPU. Increased load on CPU shortens life expectancy. This in turn means buying new CPU, or whole new computer. Also it takes more electricity for more processing. Are the differences huge? Probably not, but then again a penny saved is a penny earned. So how can leaving unused registry entry's not have an impact? I am really curious to know.

Sorry the filing cabinet analogy is wrong, When you start a program, it does NOT sort through the registry (aka filing cabinets) to find the appropriate keys - it goes directly to them because it knows where they are, so it doesn't matter whether you have 2 "filing cabinets" or sixty, the seek time is exactly the same. That's why orphaned entries have little or no effect on performance. The only time it might have some effect is on boot up, but the average user won't normally notice.
