What is the BEST Registry Cleaner for Win 7 Ultimate or Pro 64 Bit version OS ?

That's right - Specific entries and with full knowledge of what those keys do. Just being honest.

However, that does not contradict stating that registry 'cleaners' have been known to bork a system, or

specific programs, particularly when doing a deep scan, and particularly for those with no idea of what the registry cleaner may be removing, and no interest in what it may be removing.

So while registry cleaners may target casual users they are really better suited to power users,

if useful at all.

It is safer for a casual user to leave the registry alone as 'cleaning' out old entries will  save at best a second or so on modern machines using Win7. Something most casual users will not notice.

The registry itself takes very little time compared to scanning a users software and files.

The other anti reg cleaner software argument stems from those threads that pop up frequently

enough from casual users who have been tricked into a 'free' scan and end up with a software they

have difficulty removing, and which keeps pestering them to buy the full version to fix all the problems

it has found.

In these instances these 'system optimiser' programs are nothing more than spyware/malware,

and a scam preying on the unsuspecting.

People like my sister-in-law, an avowed technophobe who's mantra is "I just want it to work",

but makes no effort to learn  basics such as Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

So, as these forums are heavily populated by casual users, most of those who contribute will warn

people off reg cleaner/system optimising programs as the safer option.

For those wanting a reg cleaner I use revo uninstaller pro to uninstall all programs, and have it remove any leftovers from install. Then once every 3 months or so I remove all junk files from system and use ccleaner. Good luck

What you don't seem to understand is this. Orphaned entries in the Registry have little or no impact whatsoever on machine performance. There's absolutely no need to use any sort of cleaner, automated or not.

Man I tell you the way some people think. You got people saying you don't need one then turn around and say I edit with regedit. The only difference is that one is automated. Those that are scared of automation removing something important should stay out or regedit also. If you used reg cleaners then you would know that you have the option on what gets removed. Those that say the registry can get way larger than any user is ever likely to manage needs to use a little common sense. If the registry grows it takes longer for the system to look through that database. If you need proof of that put some files on your hdd and do a search then fill the drive up and do a search and see if search time is the same. No matter how anyone wants to spin it the more items the computer has to look through the longer it takes thus making the statements "Getting rid of "junk" entries from the registry is an urban myth" simply wrong. Those that say that they are waste of money may be correct, but there are free cleaners out there. So if money is an issue with using cleaners think of it this way. Free reg cleaner or $$ for more ram and hdd space. I think I will choose the free version first. Automated clean of the registry is intended for those that are not consider power users. Will the latest windows run without cleaning out the registry files yes, but again if you add more data to the mix then it takes more time to sift through it. If you still think junk files do not get left behind try revo uninstaller and see what actually gets left behind when you uninstall a program. To anyone with half a brain leaving leftover files anywhere (even the registry) is a waste.

I have lots of 3D party software, mostly Open Source. Some of them are to 'fix' things

I don't like about Windows that Monopoly$oft refuses to acknowledge is a problem, even though

thousands of people have complained, such as (here I go again) not being able to disable

Auto Arrange in Folders.

Actually Reg 'cleaners' are what's retro. They go back to when (before?) people were using 'big'

5-10GB HDD's , 256 MB RAM and Pentium1 processors.

In the here and now they just are not necessary as a routine maintenance tool.

• I have done as David M , and used regedit on occasion to target specific keys though

(create a TDR dely key, etc. ).

It's the automated thing that bothers me as well. I don't like automated anything -

driver install, Windows updates....

• My Win7 install is going on four years old, with over 150 games, 50+ other software,

and was imaged from a completely different hardware configuration just over a year ago

(without reinstalling the other software/games).

It's still quick, and does not miss a beat (not in my wildest dreams with XP, but).

lol - You got that right. Never had an issue with it, but I use AusLogic Disk Defrag.

Does that keep me from being a Monopoly$oft fan boy ?

If all regestry cleaners are so bad, why do reputable company's rewiew & recommend them?

Because of MONEY possibly?

Nothing "stone age" about not using third-party utilities that are totally UNNECCESARY and in the wrong hands positively dangerous.

I use a number of third-party programs - just not anything that I don't need.
