What is the Jave TM Plug in SSV Helper?

Do I need it?

If I don't need it, how do I get rid of it?

I'm running Windows Vista.

Java is a programming language. You need something called the Java Runtime Environment to run programs written in Java. The Plugin is part of that. A small number of websites also use this. The Java Runtime Environment will appear in Programs and Features in the Control Panel and can be uninstalled from there. Unfortunately, there is a bug in the uninstallation that leaves the entry for the plugin in the Internet Explorer Manage Addons window after Java is uninstalled. This is harmless because the file has been deleted. To remove the entry in Manage Addons would require editing the Registry.

This bug has been known since at least 2008, but nothing seems to have been done about it.

    What we want to know is exactly what this particular part of Java does and if it is necessary for it to be enabled.

    From the best answer:Therefore, if you are not in a managed, Enterprise environment—as in, this is your own personal computer—then the SSVHelper Java Browser Helper Object does nothing useful for you, and can be safely disabled.

    Background information to understand answer... The language of web page code changes over time; it evolves. A web browser over 10 years old can not read todays modern html internet language. As a result of this change, many new pieces of software have been added. Some are: java, flash, activex, silverlite, plugins, and many others. The web browser reads and executes the instructions and refers to these other sub sets of instructions that are downloaded and added.

    The computer is like this: If your car wheel has five lug nuts and you take out two; The car will still drive. Driving around a fast sharp turn and hitting a pot hole could make your wheel fall off. Just because you can not see a potential problem by removing some thing does not mean every thing will work properly at all times.

     Try disabling java, activex, flash and see if your banking web site will function. No. The best practice for programmers would be to install the extra software on the computer; but not active in windows until needed.

     For all these reasons I said above, it is recommended to keep your computer up to date, so you can benefit by the browser working properly as the author, internet coders intended, and preventing problems by installing updates.
