Explorer.exe Crashes Constantly When Accessing Control Panel or Any Start Menu Item on WIN 7 x64

Hello,

I have explorer.exe crashing when I try to open the Control Panel on Seven x64 and on some right clicking on files and on anything I search or try to open in the Start Menu.

I think the problem started after I created the Godmode folder through Windows 7 Manager from Yamisoft (I managed to get rid of Godmode anyway).

I can access all components of the Control Panel through the cpl files in Windows directory and none crashes but if I try to open the main Control Panel window explorer crashes.

I run ShellExView and disabled all Shell extension which are NOT from Microsoft and the problem persist.

The problem doesn't occur in Safe Boot mode.

I checked the Event Viewer and the explorer crashes have this info:

I run sfc while in safe mode since it wouldn't start in normal mode and it says that it couldn't repair some files.

    Hello Auggy,

    Unfortunately I am not getting any more dumps and in the meanwhile i reinstalled Fences since i thought it wasn't the culprit.

    I think the dumps were created because i followed these steps from another post:

    When dealing with heap corruption issues, it can be useful to enable full page heap on an executable, and then debug the process.  Not sure if that would have helped with what your situation turned out to be, but it can be helpful in other situations.

    To do this, you will want to download and install the Debugging Tools for Windows (get them from the SDK or directly download a previous version).  Also download and installApplication Verifier .

    Then...

    1) launch Application Verifier

    2) in the "Applications" section, right-click and choose "Add Application"

    3) navigate to explorer.exe and click the "Open" button

    4) select explorer.exe in the "Applications" section

    5) in the "Tests" section, clear all check boxes

    6) expand "Basics"

    7) check only the "Heaps" box

    8) from the "View" menu, select "Property Window"

    9) in the "Properties" section, ensure the "Full" property is set to "TRUE"

    10) press the "Save" button, then Exit

    11) launch WinDbg from the Debugging Tools for Windows

    12) kill explorer.exe using e.g. Task Manager

    13) from the "File" menu in WinDbg, choose "Open Executable"

    14) navigate to explorer.exe, and click the "Open" button

    15) explorer.exe will "break", press F5

    16) wait for the problem to happen; when it does, type the following in the command box at the bottom:

    .dump /ma c:\temp\explorer.dmp

    16) wait for the dump to be written, and then upload it for analysis, or analyze the crash yourself; appverifier's heap corruption checks will likely be able to pinpoint the corruptor, instead of the corruption detector which is often the case with heap corruption scenarios.

    To be honest I always got stuck at point 15 since i don't understand what "explorer.exe will "break"" means and when I write the line at point 16 I get: "(17b0.1060):

    Break instruction exception - code 80000003 (first chance) *** ERROR: Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for ntdll.dll - ntdll!CsrSetPriorityClass+0x40: 00000000`7767cb60 cc int 3"

    This is the same error when I tried to inspect the dump files myself but I am not very expert so probably I didn't open the files properly since you were able to view them.

    Anyway I think something got written anyway so I can remove fences again and see if I manage to create dumps again but let me know if those steps are correct and if i need to enable only heaps or whatever.

    As for the other issues on my system (restore points getting deleted and anyone has any idea?

    Otherwise I will open a new topic on the specific subjects.

    Hi Threshold,

    The issue that you have is pretty annoying but I guess that can be fixed.

    I have a suggestion that might help you, even Vista had this issue when it was launched and later I found that there was a cpl file that was causing the problem and once I had that deleted the control panel started working.

    History:

    This is what I did:

    Navigated to the system32 folder and used the search window and searched for all the cpl files. I found a cpl file named firebird.cpl, which I felt that was a bit odd and renamed it to firebirdold, but I still had the same problem, so I copied that to a different locatio n(backup) and deleted the file from system32 and launched the explorer and it worked like a charm.

    Since that was for Windows Vista I haven’t had crashes in windows 7, you might try it and let me know.

    This is what you can try, a simple one:

    Search for .cpl files in system32 and you would be listed with those files.

    Plan A:

    Look for the firebird.cpl or some odd looking cpl file and try launching it, it might not open up, so take a backup of that file and move it some different location and delete the file and try launching the control panel.

     If that fails then:

    Plan B:

    Try launching all the .cpl files and check if they open up properly, if any of the .cpl file doesn’t open up then that should be the one that is causing the problem. Again take a backup of the file and delete it from the system32 and then try opening the control panel.

    Hope this fixes…

    Hello Auggy,

    Since I keep searching for a solution I had found Stardock programs as culprits too so I had already tried uninstalling Fences with no results.

    I tried again and the problem persists unfortunately.

    I also removed Nvidia drivers and reinstalled new ones with no luck.

    I tried the clean boot too and the problem is in Windows since disabling all 3d party services had no results.

    Safe mode doesn't have the problem though as I said.

    I found a new error related to explorer.exe in the EV:

    The description for Event ID 1026 from source .NET Runtime cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

    If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

    The following information was included with the event:

    Application: Explorer.EXE

    Framework Version: v4.0.30319

    Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.

    Another thing I really don't understand is why all events in my system carry the "The description for Event xxx cannot be found.     The problem appears to be the DesktopDock64.dll from the Stardock Fences program.
