Hi, I can't get Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to install. I'm running Ultimate. I''m installing via Windows Update. I've got internet access. I've tried multiple times, but I always get an E_FAIL 0x80004005. I looked in the CBS.log and find (around the error) this:

Right on. I also did an in place upgrade (or what some others call a repair installation), and SP1 installed after the 1-2 hours it took to redo the installation. Pain in the butt, but it worked. I'm surprised no one from the Microsoft support team has posted this as a possible solution on these forums--I've only seen it mentioned by community members like NickMoul.
After trying everything, I performed an in place upgrade, using a DVD I had of my version of Windows 7. Don't forget to write down your activation code before you do it.
After inplace upgrade SP1 installed with no issues. I have no idea what was wrong, but W7 performs same as before.
MS needs to sort this out with a Fix-It link.
Only clue was that the inplace upgrade notified me that dot NET 4 was e corrupted and needed a reinstall which it downloaded and reinstalled. Hope that help someone.

I tried all of the recommended solutions on my x64 desktop system running Windows 7 Home Premium, and finally tried the install DVD (I downloaded the iso file) from safemode and got the same "unspecified error". I also don't know where to go from here.
Well I am not officially upset about the time and money lost on this newest "service pack" and I so use that term loosely... I read that ATI cards were having problems with it so after 6 tries I took back my recent ati card and bought an nvidia one.. Obviously didn't help... so next step, changing the registry value for netfilters from the default 8 to 14... and again, obviously didn't help either.. I give up............
Uhhhg! Another 6hrs of my life lost to a MS update. I really thought this version was going to be different. Not so much. Just like the issue of Steaming media from one PC to another via the "Play to" option in media player. It just don't work. After trying all suggestions of "try this" for the problems I have had with Windows 7, I'm frustrated as a user and PC Tech. One fellow user said it best. I shouldn't HAVE to go though the "try this" suggestions. It should just work. Feel very very sorry for the average user who is not technical.
