Hi, I can't get Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to install. I'm running Ultimate. I''m installing via Windows Update. I've got internet access. I've tried multiple times, but I always get an E_FAIL 0x80004005. I looked in the CBS.log and find (around the error) this:

Right on.  I also did an in place upgrade (or what some others call a repair installation), and SP1 installed after the 1-2 hours it took to redo the installation.  Pain in the butt, but it worked.  I'm surprised no one from the Microsoft support team has posted this as a possible solution on these forums--I've only seen it mentioned by community members like NickMoul.

After trying everything, I performed an in place upgrade, using a DVD I had of my version of Windows 7. Don't forget to write down your activation code before you do it.

After inplace upgrade SP1 installed with no issues. I have no idea what was wrong, but W7 performs same as before.

MS needs to sort this out with a Fix-It link.

Only clue was that the inplace upgrade notified me that dot NET 4 was e corrupted and needed a reinstall which it downloaded and reinstalled. Hope that help someone.

Best of luck.

I have a ASUS laptop with was purchased in January this year. For the last 3 days (lost count of how many times) I have been trying to install SP1 for Windows 7 (I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) .  It keeps on failing with error 80004005 after about 20 minutes.

I have tried using Windows Update and the download file windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe with the same result.  I have tried in Safe Mode.  I have disabled my virus software (Trend Micro).  I have run the Windows Update troubleshooter. I have installed  the System Update Readiness tool (hotfix).  I have tried a clean startup.  I have run a system file check.  All to no avail.  There are 406 GB free on the C partition. I rang Microsoft Technical Support who were going to ring me at 2.00pm yesterday however I received no phone call.  From what I have read from other threads & posts the only way some people were able to fix it was with a fresh install of Windows 7 which is a very time consuming exercise when you have to re-install all your programs etc. As I have already wasted enough time I am not going to try anymore at the moment  I think I will wait & see if Microsoft can come up with a solution as it seems to be that I am not the only one experiencing this problem.

i got sp1 to install on window7 professional x64. my laptop is a x32 operating system with window7 ultimate and just resently got the e_fail error code 0x80004005... I disabled my antivirus and shut down my firewall aswell disabled all un-nessary running programs including java and itunes which is not related to the operating system but is related to my processor usage. I still run into issue, is this caused by bad .dll line rewrite? i speak of the .ini files being rewriten to an update the system, might be something within the registry. Anyways i do not suggest anyone to mess with this files unless you know what you are doing, I have left mine alone since i am not a programmer.
