Hi, I can't get Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to install. I'm running Ultimate. I''m installing via Windows Update. I've got internet access. I've tried multiple times, but I always get an E_FAIL 0x80004005. I looked in the CBS.log and find (around the error) this:

Right on. I also did an in place upgrade (or what some others call a repair installation), and SP1 installed after the 1-2 hours it took to redo the installation. Pain in the butt, but it worked. I'm surprised no one from the Microsoft support team has posted this as a possible solution on these forums--I've only seen it mentioned by community members like NickMoul.
After trying everything, I performed an in place upgrade, using a DVD I had of my version of Windows 7. Don't forget to write down your activation code before you do it.
After inplace upgrade SP1 installed with no issues. I have no idea what was wrong, but W7 performs same as before.
MS needs to sort this out with a Fix-It link.
Only clue was that the inplace upgrade notified me that dot NET 4 was e corrupted and needed a reinstall which it downloaded and reinstalled. Hope that help someone.

Folks, I had the same problem on the corporate laptop. struggled with it for days a while back and couldnt resolve it. Just recently the device got into an endless loop of trying to install SP1 and retracting the changes. I tried all the suggestions with no joy. Finally the one suggestion that I overlooked and thought there was no way that it could be the problem was the network filter drivers as some people have suggested and also in the MS KB here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530477. Why Microsoft doesnt point to this specific fix instead of the general info page here http://windows.microsoft.com/troubleshootwindows7sp1 is a mystery. The link in the SP1 installation points to the latter (why???). Could have saved a lot heartache.
Anyway Windows 7 SP1 installed on my laptop now. so happy.
FINALLY!!!! After dozens of wasted hours trying to fight this SP1 for 2 YEARS, This simple "fix it for me" link in the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530477 link, allow my SP1 to not only install, but fully configure successfully. I was in "clean boot" when I did it, but it finally worked. Now maybe I can get past this stupid "Your computer needs to be updated" pop-up window! Thank you, ozmo777!

I got the same error-message in my CBS.log but I used now Windows 8, Pro, 64-Bit (don't know if I should open a new thread)
The real pain is:
I installed Win 8 new (not upgrade) and installed only my antivirus (Kaspersky). After I done a Sfc scan, and again the same entry! This is just impossible, so whats wrong?
