extremely slow reboot

I use a dell laptop with windows xp and am having extremely slow reboots.

specs:

MS Windows XP Home SP3

Intel CPU T2060 @ 1.60 GHz

2.0GB RAM

ATI Mobility Radeon X1400

Dell Inspiron 9400

Using Windows task manager I click on shutdown then restart

Once it restarts the first thing I notice on the screen is

Dell

then Windows XP

then a full black screen

Welcome on a blue screen appears at 1 minute 45 seconds

It takes more than 3 minutes for the day of the week, time and date to appear in the right lower corner

It takes more than 5 minutes for the start button to become responsive to a click

It takes more then 7 minutes to open Mozilla Firefox

How do I troubleshoot and get a faster reboot?

Using msconfig  services, hide all microsoft services the only item are my lexmark printer and Microsoft Automated troubleshooting service

under the startup tab the only item to start with reboot is ctfmon

With most software off on reboot how come it is taking so long?  Also I use Mcafee antivirus plus and I had the Mcafee boxes unchecked with reboot.  That is no evident active antivirus system load with reboot

i have checked for malware using Malwarebytes full scan approximately 8 hours and no malware

I have checked for malware also using Kapersky free download and it too found no malware

I use Ccleaner, Privacy Mantra and Glary utilities regularly

    With almost everything unchecked with msconfig services and startup most everything is in manual mode.  

    Suggestion:  this is not good and can be contributing to your issue.

    They should not be updating with a reboot.  If there are background programs that I do not know about or do not know how to alter.  Is there a way to find these?

    Is there anything that can be gleaned from viewing windows task manager processes, performance etc?

    Suggestion:  yes... you can see which processes are consuming resources.

    For my computer > properties> allow indexing do you want to apply the change to C:\ only or C:, subfolders and tiles

    Which choice and why?

    *Suggestion:  1) Indexing happens mainly once and done (updates are quick.) You may just want to let it go, unless it's been more than a day.  2) apply changes to C: and subfolders, or your changes will be applied only to the top level of C:*

    AOL is a hog and it does not open automatically.  Only manual.  Again it may be one of thos that runs secretly in the background??? but it is set to manual.

    I do not know if I have an AV program to always download and install an update.  How do I check?

    Suggestion:  this is not likely your problem, but to find out you need to check the settings in your AV program itself.

    How do you uninstall all of the tool bars?  Are they all found viewing in add remove programs or is there some other method?

    Suggestion:  this depends on each browser... it's not a universal answer.

    I just want to be able to google search otherwise I do not need any toolbars

    I went to the soluto web site and then checked it out on www.downloads.com.

    It seems like this is what is needed to figure out what is happening with each reboot.

    It appears that this download is contaminated from a users comments.  I have been using the downloads web site as a screen to avoid malware.

    Again, msconfig is a diagnostic tool. You really should not be in "manual" mode when you are finished your troubleshooting! For best results, it should be returned to its normal setting. The trick is to run programs that are not resource and/or memory hogs. :-) This includes programs like Norton, McAfee, and AOL.

    Re indexing, select the subfolders choice. Indexing is simply not needed, so don't use it. It should give you some performance boost.

    All AV programs have settings (or preferences) you should be able to adjust, including when downloads and scans occur. One thing you can do is keep your PC on overnight once a week and program the settings to download and insatll updates and scan while you are asleep.

    The best way to permanently uninstall unneeded toolbars is to use Add or Remove Programs.

    And again, if you have Windows Search 4.0 installed, you should really uninstall it. Again, use Add or Remove Programs (look for KB940157). The "Show updates" box will need to be checked first.

    On my computer I have only one antivirus program.  It is McAfee antivirus plus.  I have not renewed the subscription and it currently runs with old updates.  With the slow reboot I turned the antivirus off on reboot.  It may run in some mode despite what I have done manually by un checking all boxes in msconfig including all those related to Mcafee.

    In another thread on this site it was recommend that I check for malware using

    malwarebytes

    microsoft malicious removal kit

    Kapersky

    superantispyware

    When I viewed superantispyware on www.downloads.com a user wrote that they got a trojan with the download and was not able to remove it with norton.  So I did not download this software

    I did check for malware with malwarebytes.  The nearly 8 hour scan in full mode found no malware

    I ran the download for kapersky anvirus and it found no malware

    I ran the microsoft malicious software removal an it found no malware

    In the past I had regularly used PCpitstop PCmatic which scanned for malware but have not used it recently

    So with all of the malware checks at this moment reporting no malware I have some confidence with the multiple scans from different sources that scan with different definitions

    With regards to competing software or conflicts I have no idea if this is happening

    I would like to download and install the software programs such as the one you recommended and was warned not to download from company web sites and to use a trusted web site that screens downloads.  So I have limited my downloads to www.downloads.com.  Occassionally I will go to two cows but this software was not listed there.  On a google search I found downloads available on other sites such as snapfiles and softpedia but i do not know if they have checked the downloads for malware as is done on downloads.com

    What is the next step?

    I downloaded the microsoft safety scanner.  It indicates that it expires every 10 days.  The version that I just used was 1.0.3001.0 and ran it in quick mode.  It just completed successfully and no viruses, spyware, and potentially unwanted software were detected
