Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 Installation Failure error code 0x80073701

Hi, I have tried to install SP1 on Window 7 Home Premium x64 several times today and all end up with failure with the same error code. (error code 0x80073701 - the reference can not be found). I have tried troubleshooting windows update, system update readiness tools, disabling security software, and even installing in safe mode, and all end up with failure. I use offline installer (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe) because using windows update, the download can't even start (at first, it starts, then stuck at 22%, and then it shows the same error code).

Hope you can help...

Additional information:

Firewall: Windows Firewall

Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essential 2.0

Additional security softwares: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50 with real-time protection (has been disabled, but still fail), Panda USB Vaccine (I think this has no connection at all with this problem)

Ferdian and Ron,

Can you try the following:

  1. Uninstall all updates for Windows. Go to Control Panel, then Uninstall a Program, then click on View installed updateson the left. One by one, find everything under the "Microsoft Windows" category that's listed as an "Update" or "Security Update", right-click on it and Uninstall (if available). You may need to reboot.
  2. Run the following from an administrator cmd prompt: dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514
  3. Try to install SP1 again.

Let me know if this resolves your problem. Thank you both so much for your cooperation in this matter!

Mark [MSFT]

PS.  I did a backup on my ext. hard drive and did a factory reset before sending it in for repair.  When it was returned I downloaded the backup and this was on 02/05/2011.

    Hi again Mark:

I purchased my ASUS N90Sc Notebook on 01/13/2010 from Amazon.com.

I had a problem with a light grey screen crash for no reason and ASUS gave me a RMA to return to their repair location in Milpedas, CA. They replaced a part no. 90R-NXYVG1000Y.   This was returned to me on

02/04/2011. ???  Should these language packs be removed and if so how?

    Thanks again,

    Ron

Thanks, Ron. A few entries stand out for me. Let me try to explain a bit before I ask any further questions.

Firstly, as I mentioned before, Home Premium only supports one language. However I see multiple languages on your machine. The following indicates that the original language on your PC was English:

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 7/14/2009 5:01 AM

The following 6 languages were installed on 11/12/2009. It's possible that they were included in your PC by ASUS, which isn't supposed to happen.

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~es-ES~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 11/12/2009 3:57 AM

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~fr-FR~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 11/12/2009 3:57 AM

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~pt-BR~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 11/12/2009 3:57 AM

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~pt-PT~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 11/12/2009 3:57 AM

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~th-TH~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 11/12/2009 3:57 AM

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~tr-TR~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 11/12/2009 3:57 AM

This last language is more interesting to me since it was recently installed (2/5/2011):

    Package Identity : Microsoft-Windows-Client-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~zh-TW~6.1.7600.16385State : InstalledRelease Type : Language PackInstall Time : 2/5/2011 9:55 PM

    Now my questions:

    • When and where did you purchase your PC?
    • If it was purchased before 2/5/2011, do you recall doing anything on 2/5/2011 that may have caused the Taiwanese (zh-tw) language pack to be installed?

    Thanks,

    Mark [MSFT]
