Hi, I have tried to install SP1 on Window 7 Home Premium x64 several times today and all end up with failure with the same error code. (error code 0x80073701 - the reference can not be found). I have tried troubleshooting windows update, system update readiness
tools, disabling security software, and even installing in safe mode, and all end up with failure. I use offline installer (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe) because using windows update, the download can't even start (at first, it starts, then stuck at 22%, and
then it shows the same error code).
Hope you can help...
Additional information:
Firewall: Windows Firewall
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essential 2.0
Additional security softwares: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50 with real-time protection (has been disabled, but still fail), Panda USB Vaccine (I think this has no connection at all with this problem)
Additional resident programs: SmartDefrag 1.5, Advanced SystemCare 3.7.3, Daemon Tools Lite
I had the same problem installing Service Pack. I have a fairly new Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. I've tried to Install SP1 via Windows Update, and from the DVD (I DL'ed the iso and burned it); either way it full installs, restarts the computer,
then while it's configuring it always gets to 99% and then it says "Failure Configuring Service Pack" with Error Code "E_FAIL (0x800040005), and then my windows goes through the process of undoing the update.
I have tried all 5 of the steps listed here, none of them work. System Readiness tool installed, SP1 install failed. Ran Scannow, no errors found, SP1 install failed again. Checked my Harddrive for Errors, none found, ran System Readiness tool again, SP1 failed
again. On the last step #5, I ran Startup Repair and at the very end it said "Windows Cannot repair errors automatically". I sent the report, but now I don't know what to do.
Please help. Not sure if this matters, but this is my 3rd problem. First I started getting the unauthentic windows issue, and opened a ticket with Microsoft and eventually fixed that problem. But since then, I've also been unable to install MSE at all. I used
Symantec Virusscan instead, and it finds no viruses, errors, or malware on my CPU. And now, SP1 won't install.
For the record, all other Windows Updates have installed and worked perfectly fine. And I do have a legit legal version of Windows 7 that came installed on my laptop with my key sticker underneath the laptop.
Please help :(
