Using Windows 7, how do I run CHKDSK?

I've searched throughout the Control Panel and it's submenus and options but can find no means to initiate a scan for disk errors!

I did find chkdsk.exe in the Windows\System32 folder but when I double click it, the only response is a flash of the DOS {black, command prompt} screen! Is that the correct response?!

Is there no way to run [schedule] a scan disk [for errors] as there has been in earlier versions of Windows?!

It's done the same way in Windows 7 as it was in earlier versions of Windows:

  1. Open the "Computer" window
  2. Right-click on the drive in question
  3. Select the "Tools" tab
  4. In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

This still does not answer question of how to schedule chkdsk at a regular time other than boot-up. I I would like to schedule chkdsk on my passport usb3 drive which is reserved for backups but often this fails with error" could not open folder". If In chkdsk and then backup it is OK

    Can you help?

Was this directed at me?  I'm not sure what you mean.  I did select "run as administrator".

Between steps 2 and 3, you also need to left-click 'Properties' (at the bottom of the drop-down list, that appears after you right-click the drive in question, at step 2)

I can run chkdsk, and i find errors, and it says it will run on reboot but it never does.  Anything I can do about this?
