Using Windows 7, how do I run CHKDSK?

I've searched throughout the Control Panel and it's submenus and options but can find no means to initiate a scan for disk errors!

I did find chkdsk.exe in the Windows\System32 folder but when I double click it, the only response is a flash of the DOS {black, command prompt} screen! Is that the correct response?!

Is there no way to run [schedule] a scan disk [for errors] as there has been in earlier versions of Windows?!

It's done the same way in Windows 7 as it was in earlier versions of Windows:

  1. Open the "Computer" window
  2. Right-click on the drive in question
  3. Select the "Tools" tab
  4. In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

    A beg your pardon Bruce, that way to do it might have been the same, but in all earlier versions of windows, at least 98 on, scandisk was in the system tools folder with the system tools folder. That what people want to know, & what I came looking for. Why it was changed or removed? Much of windows has changed & this is a fascist thing to do to customers who have got used to windows over the 20+ years it has been around. You don't change things that have become a norm, like keyboard short cuts to do things including shut down, restart. Windows 8 & 10 are useless & should never be used for a serious, non touch screen pc.

    Right click on the drive, select Properties and click the Tools tab.

    You can access Help and Support from the Control Panel by clicking Help (on the Menu Bar) , and View Help.

    I don't understand this.

    Right clicking on drive in question does not bring up a Tools tab in Windows 7.

    Also, there is no Windows Help and Support icon in Control Panel.
