Change Power Settings

How to:

  • Set your computer to go (or not to go) to sleep after a specified period of inactivity. For more information, see Turn off a computer: frequently asked questions.
  • Adjust the brightness of your display.
  • Choose when to turn off the display during periods of inactivity.
  1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Power Options.
  2. Under the plan that you want to change, click Change plan settings.
  3. On the Change settings for the plan page, choose the display and sleep settings that you want to use when your computer is running on battery (if applicable) and when it's plugged in.
  4. For more options, click “Change advanced power settings.”
  5. When you’re done click OK.

I put mine to sleep regularly ... on purpose ... but it has no effect on the persistent loss of function if I let go of my mouse for a minute or more.

I have a screen saver running now.  I tried it to see if it would appear when the screen escaped me into sleep mode.  It does not.  Occasionally the screen saver will appear, unpredictably, but in most cases the dreaded black screen of sleep appears.

I use my laptop  in conjunction with my activities in Ham Radio.  Imagine my frustration when I make a contact on my radio and them reach to enter it into my log, only to find, at a minimum, a fifteen second delay to access the log.

    Boooooooooooooo.

Thanks alot to you and all the others who responded to my inquiry.

I have NEVER(to my knowledge) used sleep mode with this or any of my computers but one day I had a brainstorm and manually put my PC to sleep, woke it up about an hour later and "wa_la" the problem had disappeared! That's not to say, knowing Microsoft, that it is fixed permanently & won't happen again, I am just thrilled to see it gone.
