You never want the computer to go to sleep?

Type Power Options into the start search box

Press enter.

Select ChangePlan settings next to the prefered plan that is selected

Set Put the computer to sleep - Never.

Change Power Settings

How to:

  • Set your computer to go (or not to go) to sleep after a specified period of inactivity. For more information, see Turn off a computer: frequently asked questions.
  • Adjust the brightness of your display.
  • Choose when to turn off the display during periods of inactivity.
  1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking Power Options.
  2. Under the plan that you want to change, click Change plan settings.
  3. On the Change settings for the plan page, choose the display and sleep settings that you want to use when your computer is running on battery (if applicable) and when it's plugged in.
  4. For more options, click “Change advanced power settings.”
  5. When you’re done click OK.

When I went to options the "never" was already selected selected  before I made ANY changes.  I did not appreciate that and no one in my family was aware of it either. I recently had my computer in for service but I can't imagine a technician doing that without consent.

The never may have been selected, but the computer goes to sleep anyway if it has been idle for as small an amout of time as 1/2 hour.  I'm about ready to get rid of this piece of junk!!

Here is the Registry change solution that I took to my

Tech Repair guys.  I was afraid to get into the registry myself.

In search type "regedit" without quotes, right-click it in the list and run as administrator. Or, if it is an administrator account, press the windows key + R and type regedit and the ok button.

Drill down through this registry path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>>SYSTEM>>CurrentControlSet>>Control>>Power

You will want to select the key that begins with 238... and expand it

You then want to expand the key that begins with 7BC...>>DefaultPowerSchemeValues

Select each string under the DefaultPowerSchemeValues and edit the AcSettingIndex and DcSettingIndex for every one.

While changing the Ac and Dc strings, (the default is 120 seconds) you will need to double click on each entry, change the value to Decimal, and type in how many seconds you want to change it to. I changed each of mine to 3600 (1 hour).

Once you have finished making your changes, reboot the machine to have them take effect.

I hope it works for you as it did for me.

The choices in "Power Options" do not work.  I set them all to NEVER and the thing still went to sleep in two minutes.  The changes to the registry were the only thing that worked for my Lenovo E560 laptop.
