How do you change/edit the cell phone number in Windows Live/Hotmail?

I've followed prompts to pages which claim to allow you to change your cell/mobile phone.  But, when you get to the next page there is nothing when allows you to edit or change the number. It list the old cell number(which I have not used in 5 years)...I'm trying to get the calendar to send appointments to my phone.

The information in this post was accurate and correct in November 2011. It is no longer the correct way to change a phone number.

This is the procedure that should be used after November 2017:

Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/

Click on Security

Click on Update your security info

Click on Add security info

Add the new number and remove the old

I just did this to remove an old phone number - in Hotmail - upper right Options - more options.

On left Show Options - Hotmail - under Managing Accounts - Account Details - Account Security -

Security Info - Manage - Delete the phone number and follow the rest of the prompts.

That is what worked for me however if you have any issues then use Hotmail's Support.

Answers is a peer supported group and unfortunately has no real influence on Hotmail.

    Ok...the issue has been partially resolved with a chat session with Microsoft.  I made a change to my security cell number while travelling. I take an unlocked phone and use local sim cards.  The change to the cell does not take effect for 30 days.  During this time you can make no further change, so basically I have to wait out the 30 day time period and once the number is changed I will then be able to go in to Security and update the cell number to my home number again.  will have another 30 day period till it takes effect again but that is okay.  At that time I will also make the first contact point an email address rather than a cell to receive security codes so that this is no longer an issue while travelling.  This may resolve all the frustration.

    I followed the above instruction and when I hit update security info it wants to send a code to a cellphone I number I no longer have.  Back to original issue....how to change the tel number so I can received codes??  There is no option provided to receive the code via email.

    This is SO frustrating I am considering changing from hotmail to gmail after years and years.  Travelling to 6 countries recently was nothing but frustrating going through email blocks and resetting passwords.  Can anyone provide a workable solution or let me know how I can contact support.
