The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. the same problem i am also facing any i have repeated the same for about 10 times in past two days but the problem is still persisting...kindly help

    From what I have found on my computer is that the update is not being installed. If you look in your installed updates at the bottom of the updates window. I can't find it anywhere. I think that is why it is wanting to keep installing multiple times.  I still haven't figure out how to uninstall it or hide it because it's not showing up.

    Hi Ronald!

         Your info about contacting MS PC Safety was the solution!  The tech did a remote connect to my PC and resolved the problem with the recurring update icon in the Taskbar.  (I see in another post the KB2538242 update was found to be defective).

    Hopefully, others here will heed the advice given.

    Guys!

    You need to contact Microsoft, (866) PC Safety, don't forget to press 1 before 866.  I contacted MS PS Safety, as well. The agent remotely accessed my PC and removed  bunch of unneeded updates, and took care of that annoying  KB2538242. So, it is not showing up anymore

    Worked like a charm.  Thanks for the added information.

    One question, would it matter if unneed versions of the fix are run?  For ex runnining the 64 bit version on a 32 bit machine (as well as the 32 bit version)?

    I'm guessing that only people with 64 bit systems are having this problem.  If you have a 32 bit system then only install the x86 file.
