Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times

The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    why do we need to insert windows disk if it's already installed? who has the time to do all this? I'll buy a smartphone!

    I cant believe all the answers that have been laid out for this problem !

    The update keeps trying to reinstall because the old one is corrupted,

    sure you can sweep it under the rug (ie: hide the update from popping up)

    but the fix is removing the old one (all be it a very stubborn thing to do)

    removing all the bits and pieces via register cleaners , re: if bits remain the install

    refuses to install and will ask for location msi, , so avoid that problem by

    cleaning the register of all the old bits and pieces left over from the uninstall,

    ive even run into problems of doing that , the uninstall from windows refused

    to uninstall because its corrupted, it told me to find the msi program repeatedly

    the solution was trial professional uninstaller with the registry cleaner...

    then the corrupted program was gone . thus allowing the new update install

    to register correctly and not need to keep installing itself over and over. (see how simple it is?)

    Arsalan had the correct solution.  The notification keeps coming up because it is NOT installing.  Hiding the notification solves nothing.  If you have a 64 bit system you have to install both x86 AND x64 versions.  Go to this link and download the files and install them manually.

    This is the correct solution, Hiding the update solves nothing, but installing both x86 and x64 on a 64 bit system worked for me also.

    in regard to the answer saying which answer is best , it all depends on what is causing the re install not to take hold, sure you can download 86 version and the 64 bit version and fix your problem if that's all that stopping the update from taking hold ?

    In my case the 86 version was corrupted and the msi to uninstall it was missing , installing the old 86 version would not install due to bits of a corrupted file already in the register ..

    If I had known where in the register these bits were , I would not have needed to download a trial version of a register cleaner and trial version revo uninstaller ..

    but i did download the trial version of both of those and they did remove the bits of the leftover corrupted 86 version and allowed the re install to take , thus allowing the update ..

    so just saying one fix , fixes all problems and or that its the best method is b.s. in my opine.

    But a total reinstall of the op system is super retarded.

    This worked  2 years ago for me, actually i think the Microsoft fix it programs do exactly what ive been talking about automatically now and this issue is redundant .. at this time..
