The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    That's almost good. A bandaid for the problem. That does not fix the problem, only hides it from view. I have the same problem in XP. MS & Billy just want you to buy Win 7. Otherwise there would be a fix somewhere at microsoft.com. It is just one problem after another in XP and Vista. XP worked perfectly fine until recently. What a coincidence. As for Vista, it always sucked. Since there does not appear to be a fix, (.NET. Framework is just as bad, if not worse) you have a great idea. Please share with 85% of pc users that still have XP and Vista, any other methods to at least hide the money hungry !@#$%^&* attempts to force everyont to purchase Win 7.

    Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242)

    I have windows XP, not Win 7.  Why am I getting this update?  I went to Control Panel and it is not there for removal.  I tried the "Do not notify me about this update" and it did not work.  I have installed it about 10 time previously and it stopped. Now it is back.  Please help before I go nuts.  Thanks anyone with a solution.
