Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times

The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    People, what's wrong with you? I already posted solution, check couple of messages above on page 1 of this forum. All you have to do is read and FOLLOW instructions. Again, if you have that update installed on your PC, to stop it from the loop of coming back do this:

     

    How to hide an update in Windows 7 and for Vista

    ==============================

    1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All Programs", and click "Windows Update".
    2. From the left panel, click "Check for update".
    3. After receiving the scan results, please click "View available updates" under the "Install updates" button.
    4. Please right-click the update (KB2538242), and click "Hide update". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Visit the Microsoft Virus Solution and Security Center for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you are having issues with installing the update itself, visit Support for Microsoft Update for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates. 

    Sorry but this fix didn't work for me and I have Vista. So maybe we need a different fix for Vista. I also have a Windows 7 OS and so far I am not having problems with that one. In the past I have gone out to microsoft.com and installed the updates from their site but this update is reverting me right back to my computers Window Update to install and that is not working any better than the automatic update.

    This will show you how to hide a Windows Update so it will not show up again in the available updates list to be installed. You can unhide the Windows Update to allow it to be in the list again if you wanted to install it later.

    1. Visit the Microsoft Virus Solution and Security Center for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you are having issues with installing the update itself, visit Support for Microsoft Update for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates. 

    1. Open the Control Panel. (Classic View)

    2. Click on the Windows Update icon.

    3. Click on View available updates. (See screenshot below)

    4. Right click on the update you want to hide, and click Hide update. (See screenshot below)

    5. Click the red X button in the upper right corner to close the window.

    OPTION TWO

    How to Unhide a Windows Update

    1. Open the Control Panel. (Classic View)

    2. Click on the Windows Update Icon.

    3. Click on Restore hidden updates. (See screenshot below)

    4. Check the update you want to restore and click Restore button. (See screenshot below)

    5. You will now be taken back to the original Update window with Windows Update checking for updates. (See screenshot below)

    6. When done, your hidden update will now be listed in the available update list.
