The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times.

    Don't Reinstall your Operating System. (Unnecessary)

    Don't Get Register Cleaners. (Can do more harm than good)

    I've had this type of problem pop up in the past and a Manual Install Works.

    Download and install both the x86 and x64 versions for a 64 bit system. (If you have a 64 bit system)

    Originally I tried installing just the one I thought I needed and it didn't work. Installing Both solved the issue.

    I have a windows 7 upgrade disk. (Ultimate)

    After I click the upgrade button, it say's I have the newest version and will not give me an option to do anything but exit.

    How do I do a repair??

    Ive found the answer !

    do not hide your update and sweep it under the rug !

    the  answer is that the 2005 Microsoft Visual ++ is corrupted

    and the update will not stick !

    Uninstall the 2005 version 2005 Microsoft Visual ++ and if your like me

    the uninstall the regular windows uninstall it dont work !

    you can download a professional uninstaller program such a revo ..for free

    and then clean the register with a register cleaner they are many of those out there

    I found them necessary as to get rid of the remnants of com links showing bad

    locations of install and uninstall locations preventing installs and uninstalls

    get rid of all the residue of 2005 Microsoft Visual ++

    then the fresh install of the same program downloaded at microsofts downloads

    2005 Microsoft Visual ++ the install should go smooth and then the update of the security

    for 2005 Microsoft Visual ++ will take hold and not pop up anymore ! sweeping it under the rug is not the answer ..this worked for me..

    it was not easy to get all of the remnants unistalled tho.. if you dont get it uninstalled all the way

    try a more advanced uninstaller program the revo unistaller worked great for me

    Do not do that ! A total re install of the op system is not the answer !

    sheez some people who offer help are just morons are either messing with you !
