Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times

The Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times. Three times so far in two days. I had an identical problem with another security update for Microsoft Visual C. My OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Must I download and install this update manually for 32 and 64 bit systems to fix this problem (which was the fix for the installation problem with the Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175))? If not, what do I need to do to fix the problem? Any help is appreciated.

Hi brianchill84,

If you have a retail version of Windows, perform a repair install by completing the following steps:

  1. Log into Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Disable your antivirus, firewall and any other security program.
  3. Insert you Windows CD/DVD into the drive.
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Select Install Now
  6. If asked, uncheck I want to help make Windows installation better and select Go online to getthe lasted updates for installation.
  7. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  8. Click on the Upgrade option.
  9. Once the installation is complete, enter you product key.
  10. Click on Use recommended settings.
  11. Select your time zone, date and time settings.
  12. Windows will then prepare your desktop.
  13. Check to make sure there are no files missing.

Please note, this process should not affect your personal files, however, as a precaution, make sure you have a backup of your data before you peroform these steps.

If you do not have a Windows retail disc, please create a new thread in this forum. Include the complete version of Windows you have installed, the make and model of your computer and any troubleshooting steps you've tried.

    OK FOLKS< HERE"S A NEW INFORMATION__

    I contacted a Microsoft free support tech because this is a security update.

    He advised me that KB2538242 is defective and will be replaced in two weeks. The correct thing to do is hide( instructions find above, couple of messages) it and later you can unhide it again then it should disappear from the install list.

     Besides,

     there are 3 updates, which one to download? I have 64 bit machine. The size of that update was originally only 6.2 MB

    vcredist_IA64.EXE 6.0 MB
    vcredist_x64.EXE 3.0 MB
    vcredist_x86.EXE 2.0 MB

    For x86, 32 bit systems, install vcredist_x86.EXE

    For x64, 64 bit systems, install both vcredist_x86.EXE and vcredist_x64.EXE

    vcredist_IA64.EXE is for Itanium processors which are a rarely found on Home systems.

    Worked like a charm.  Thanks for the added information.

    One question, would it matter if unneed versions of the fix are run?  For ex runnining the 64 bit version on a 32 bit machine (as well as the 32 bit version)?

    This will hide update, and it will not continue installing. The purpose of this is to prevent it to go into the loop of installing. This ill not install the update. Microsoft told me that they should release patch i 2 weeks, but for now this shall do.

    Now for the manual installation, many people have the same problem, they install update, the update history says- Update successful", after rebooting PC, again this update is asking to be installed. So, either you do it automatically or manually, the update is defective. so for now just hide it.

    Thanks for the help !  This resolved the problem. After following your advice, I clicked on " check for updates " and Windows now says my updates are all current and there are no new updates available.  Your answer was spot on ! Thanks again.
