original title: Hi i have an activated win7 pro version. It is running slow now days and i was thinking to reinstall it but the big problem is that I have lost the serial Key.

Hi i have an activated win7 pro version. It is running slow now days and i was thinking to reinstall it but the big problem is that I have lost the serial Key. any one know how i get it back from my pc? I am really stuck! Any help will be great.

Here are some utilities, all of which will display your product keys:

Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

(It does a good job of providing a wealth of information.)

and: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

Note: Also check the side of your PC case or bottom of the laptop for the

OEM key code. If there is a sticker with the code it will most likely not

match what is displayed by the utilities mentioned above as OEMs such as

Dell use an internal key code when they build your PC.

The key code on the sticker is for use with your Windows CD

(that hopefully came with your PC)

if you ever need to reinstall Windows.

    I have found my old key but i would still like if this problem could be solved. I found it in my old hardDisk. but all your help was great you guys a the best.

    but still i would like a solution so that this dont happen to some one else in the future. I will post the solution to different forums if we find one :);

    The only problem you had was not having a legal key.

    Hi i am back. I was busy installing the win7 and other softwares in the PC:). but but It is not an illegal key why do you think it was not a legal key?

    Microsoft has an agrement with the University of Reading.<--- Every body knows this University, First human Syborg was from there yada yada yada.

    they give the students ability or a sub account to get several softwares from microsoft cost free. I got my win7 and visualstudio and office from there. It is called MSDN program or something.

    Any ways my big Question is why is my Window being activated on an invalid key??? I am confused>

    Seeing as I was born and lived for 35 years, 20 miles from Reading, and attended a few lectures at the Uni there (as well as a couple of days as the MS HQ), I probably (used to) know that area at least as well as you  - and my in-laws lived in Caversham<g>

    There are a number of definitions involved in the term 'legal key'

    According to MS, the key is only legal when it satisfies certain conditions. Roughly, those conditions mean that if you lose any of the paperwork that accompanies the COA, then the key itself becomes non-legal. What the conditions of sale of the license to you were is printed on that paperwork - if you don't have it, then you aren't technically legal. You may be able to get the details from the SysAdmin at the Uni,  to ensure that you are still within the terms of the license.

    You have/had an MAK Key installed - which has to be an upgrade install anyhow, as do all Volume Licenses - so installing direct from whatever disk you had, even with the full MAK key, would not work without first installing a qualifying OS.
