Windows 7 update install time taking a very long time

Well I have a Windows 7 OS, and I shut down my laptop yesterday but then it automatically went in sleep mode as I slept. As I awoken it in the morning I see its at installing updates 32 of 45. Though I see the same thing in the night with no change. I also see my hard-drive light flashing like it normally does when it's doing something but is this normal and if not what can I do? Also this computer is only 3 days old, and I have not made a recovery media due to lack of media I can use to use for the back up.

You may restart your computer, then use the below steps and check if this helps resolve the issues-

Method 1: You may use the windows update troubleshooter and check if it lists and resolves any issues -

Method 2: Also I would suggest you to check in the update history if you are getting any error codes for the failed updates. If you get any errors, do provide us the same to assist you better. To check the recent updates installed on your computer.

View updates history -

a. Click Start, Settings and then control panel (all items view). Click on the Windows Update icon.

b. Click on view update history link.

c. To view the details of a single update select and right click on a listed windows update, then click on view details. Click Close when done.

Method 3: **** Use the system update readiness tool –

Download the System Readiness Tool.The System Update Readiness Tool checks your computer and tries to resolve certain conditions that could interfere with the installation of updates or other software.Here is a link to download System Readiness Tool; you may do it according to the exact configuration of the computer:

****After you download and then run the System Update Readiness Tool, restart your computer. Then check if you are able to install the updates properly.

I also am an IT Consultant. This issue has been getting worse ever since they released Windows 10. I have to install new hard drives or wipe and reload windows on numerous machines each week, Basically they have turned off the windows update servers as a way of making you move to windows 10. The average time now to get windows 7 updates after a reload is 3 to 5 days. I am currently working on a machine that has been sitting here on my workbench for 4 days trying to get any updates after a clean reload. The machine is done and ready to return to my customer except MS won't download the updates.

MS in all their wisdom thinks that the entire world will just automatically switch to windows 10 overnight and they can forget all the needs of the windows 7 users. Unfortunately I have several large companies that are stuck on windows 7 due to software conflicts of software that they use to run their businesses and the software vendors are still trying to work their way through the maze of windows 10 conflicts so no new release is yet available. So when a machine goes down they either have to wait days to get it back or buy a new machine. Not acceptable. Several of my customers have switched to Apple computers. One switched the entire company over he was so pissed at MS. That was 128 Computers! MS may think they are punishing the windows 7 users but all they are doing is pushing them away from MS products.

I hear this on a weekly basis from other consultants all over the Phoenix valley. MS keeps screwing up and Apple keeps gaining ground.

I am now offering Apple as a better solution to new computer buyers.

You mention 'stuck on windows 7' as if that is a bad thing.

As an IT consultant, you do know about all the spying Windows 10 does right?

Why move to 10 at all? Get a good firewall and AV, and install just the security patches in W7 and you should be fine.

Or, if you must move to 10, get 'shutup10' and disable most of the spying. (you would still have to edit the registry and do other things, but at least you can minimize the spying.
