Windows 7 update install time taking a very long time

Well I have a Windows 7 OS, and I shut down my laptop yesterday but then it automatically went in sleep mode as I slept. As I awoken it in the morning I see its at installing updates 32 of 45. Though I see the same thing in the night with no change. I also see my hard-drive light flashing like it normally does when it's doing something but is this normal and if not what can I do? Also this computer is only 3 days old, and I have not made a recovery media due to lack of media I can use to use for the back up.

You may restart your computer, then use the below steps and check if this helps resolve the issues-

Method 1: You may use the windows update troubleshooter and check if it lists and resolves any issues -

Method 2: Also I would suggest you to check in the update history if you are getting any error codes for the failed updates. If you get any errors, do provide us the same to assist you better. To check the recent updates installed on your computer.

View updates history -

a. Click Start, Settings and then control panel (all items view). Click on the Windows Update icon.

b. Click on view update history link.

c. To view the details of a single update select and right click on a listed windows update, then click on view details. Click Close when done.

Method 3: **** Use the system update readiness tool –

Download the System Readiness Tool.The System Update Readiness Tool checks your computer and tries to resolve certain conditions that could interfere with the installation of updates or other software.Here is a link to download System Readiness Tool; you may do it according to the exact configuration of the computer:

****After you download and then run the System Update Readiness Tool, restart your computer. Then check if you are able to install the updates properly.

It is WAY more than 6 ISO files. Beside Home, Pro, Ultimate, Enterprise, in 32 and 64 bit versions (that is 8 ISO files), you have the OEM specific ISO. I am a partner with HP, Dell and Lenovo and each has their own customized version.

I agree, if there was a master list on a reliable site, where we could pick and choose the KBxxxx files we need (not the Win10 crapware), we might be able to slipstream them in.

The big question, "Why should people be forced to do anything so convoluted?" It should be simple and it should work.

If Microsoft forces Win10 on everyone, I will simply reformat and install Windows 7. If, as some say, only Windows 10 will run on the next gen of CPUs, then I will run Hyper-V and use a Windows 7 VM.....or move to Mac or Linux

Yeah, win7 is already out for Skylake. MS gave it a reprieve for another year or two. Not sure how that works. it either works or it doesn't. Anyway, you can still get win7 installed on skylake, but boy is it a challenge. No USB 2 support in Skylake and no native USB 3 support in win7. But I did it through DVD installer and my q170 board I bought has tons of backward compatible ports (PS2) that I got it installed.

Next gen won't be so lucky I'm afraid. MS is trying to cripple everything to force upgrades to next version of windows as usual. I still have viable win xp 64-bit system that is fully functional. Just no DX10 or newer.

MS just finding new ways to get users to upgrade. All about the all might dollar.

I just bought my first Skylake (6th generation Intel Core i series for those who don't know the code names), it is a HP Elitebook 850G3. I had the choice of OS so of course I picked Win7. I didn't install it as my distributor did that. I didn't know it was a challenge? I know Kaby lake (follow up later this year, ie 7th gen CPU) will be an issue. I hate to think what will happen with the later CPU (Cannon Lake, Ice Lake, Tiger Lake).

From a manufacturers' point of view, why would they release a product (CPU, motherboard, etc.) that doesn't work with products (Win7) that customers want? One would hope someone would release drivers to make it work.

Microsoft is becoming more and more aggressive in trying to force users to Windows 10. They believe in the stick method over the carrot method. They are succeeding in alienating more and more people.

Microsoft tries to scare people by saying older versions are a 'security risk'. Get a quality router/firewall device/security appliance and use Windows 7 for 10 yrs :)

Worse than the slow updates is Microsoft's WUAUSERV.dll process (part of Windows Update) that sucks the life out of any PC. It consumes all the available memory and turns your PC's performance into that of an infected first generation Celeron. Lately, I've been completely DISABLING ALL WINDOWS UPDATES and the PCs are much, much faster, 'like new again'

Seems like Microsoft will stoop to any tactic to shove Windows 10 down users' throats.

Tere is a list of suggestions however how am i supposed to do any of it if my pc is stuck loading files. 15 hours and no progress
