Windows 7 Update Stuck at 35% (Configuring Windows Updates 35% Complete)

Hi, I have a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop that is stuck at 35% complete update. After rebooting the computer, we get the Windows login sound, then it states it is configuring Windows updates at 35%. I have let this thing go overnight and yet nothing. Below is the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log. (I've even tried plugging the computer into an Ethernet jack to see if it would work, but still no go...)

    Later I found the 70 GB wasn't really a corrupt or mistagged sector at all. It was my Opera browser, which had used that much disk space as cache for a browser game.

    It kept doing it for days until now, at a rate of about 1 GB / minute running that game, ever since my ATI Radeon blackscreened. The Opera IndexedDB folder started spawning with folders sized 400-900 MB. I kept deleting them, but only now found a workaround installing Microsoft Edge.

    I had had it for some time but thought it was total drivel, a promoted version of Explorer... however, it can load and run the game to which Opera needs to use 50+ GB of hard drive space every time with just RAM, and it's faster. A lot faster. Like 10x faster. I didn't even notice my display driver is shot. The graphics run as smoothly, in fact maybe even better than on my 5470 Radeon... looks like I never really needed that driver, just a good browser. =o

    So, from reading people's expriences with the Radeon chipsets I've found out basically all of these problems, the driver meltdown, "100% complete" problem, USN journal errors and large chunks of missing hard drive space, can and will happen even to fresh out of the factory PC's, and has nothing to with the PC's age or usage...

    I’m glad you were able to get past this issue and back into your desktop. Im running Win 7 on 2 Dell Optiplex machines and i get this issue even now on occasion, even without any updates queued up. Happens sometimes after a BSOD or unscheduled power outage. After installing SSDs as system drives into both machines and copying the original drives into them, it no longer takes 3 hours for the “cleaning up... please wait” process to finish. Hopefully the solutions suggested jn this thread will find some use for future generations.

    It finished cleaning up and I got to desktop in safe mode! It had freed 18 GB of space too. Now booted to Windows normally and it let me through to login this time! Thanks to everyone in this thread! <3<3<3

    Win 7 Home Premium with 600 GB hard drive here as well. I did the Hard drive disk cleanup after encountering a bevy of issues on my laptop, including:

    • Display driver meltdown, screen going black and graphics driver had to be restarted issue which ultimately didn't restart at all,
    • Error 766f6c756d652e63 3fi, the checkdisk error,
    • Incorrect USN journal bitmap volume while using scandisk in read only mode,
    • A mysterious loss of 70 GB of hard drive space now marked as used,

    Checkdisk does not find damaged sectors and the recovery console occasionally claims it is able to boot to Windows so I think the system should be alright.

    I stopped the 20 GB hard disk cleanup after seeing it was FILLING disk space instead of freeing it. I initially went from 130 GB to 132 emptying the trash bin but then started going below 130 as the Windows update file cleanup was progressing. I thought the incorrect bitmap volume might be culprit for both this and the 70 GB drop.

    I had a hotfix for the checkdisk error I wanted to try out but having accidentally seen my display driver had been changed (downgraded my broken ATI Radeon to a VGA display which couldn't load drivers and was showing error for the time being, using my #2 power saving Intel as main display) and were no longer showing error I wanted to reboot to see if it fixed something else, like the checkdisk error as well?

    It didn't and I got stuck onto "100% updates completed". Did the manual reset and have been getting "35% completed" since then. It took about 1 hour to finish the startup repair on recovery essentials, which ultimately said it couldn't fix this problem. Later it said there were no errors found and the computer was able to boot though.

    And from the recovery console I was able to learn there was nothing wrong with the USN bitmap, by scanning from recovery partition it was able to complete the scan with only some registry notes.

    I went to my XP and googled this problem. Found out deleting the update files might help so I used the command console in RE to remove everything from "Softwaredistribution" folder dated prior to this day. Didn't help.

    Coming to this thread I changed the name of the folder to "softwaredistribution2". Didn't help.

    Now I am in Safe mode with networking waiting at "35% completed"...

    Breaking news! Just as I finished typing I went to check and it now reads "Reorganizing. Don't shut off the power". It was updating about 40 minutes, with the entire Softwaredistribution folder presumably disabled... Assumingly I'll now restart normal windows if I get through to login and it should load for me?
