Fresh Windows 7 installation, Windows update error: 0xc8000222

I am using Lenovo Thinkpad W510, my harddisk was Seagate 320GB and it had some bad sectors so I decided to replace it with a 750GB western digital.

After replacement, I reinstalled OS with Lenovo recovery disk. Then my windows update doesn't work any more.When I click "check for updates", the Windows update window refreshes itself and after that nothing happens. When I use Lenovo update and downloaded some hot fixes for windows 7,my manual update with all the manually downloaded patches returns the same error: 0xc8000222.

I tried to install .Net 4.0, also same, error HRESULT: 0xc8000222. My Computer property shows activated status.

Even it's Lenovo problem, why Windows 7 has such a mistake that doesn't allow an activated user to update? It must be some Windows update bug, please check and help me fix this. Thanks.

The following is my information:

Windows 7 64 bit

Fresh window installation, no any patch installed yet (failed to install)

No anit-virus program

Exact step (I tried several times):

  (1) reinstall windows 7 using recovery disk

  (2) download .Net 4.0 (actually any update fails, but it's easier to find links for .Net 4.0), install it 

  (3) installation failure HRESULT: 0xc8000222

  (4) log file for .Net 4.0:

OS Version = 6.1.7600, Platform 2

OS Description = Windows 7 - x64

CommandLine = C:\98df338324089f1141\Setup.exe /x86 /x64

Using Simultaneous Download and Install mechanism

Operation: Installing

Package Name = Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup

Package Version = 4.0.30319

Exe (C:\98df338324089f1141\SetupUtility.exe) succeeded.

I tried Windows update: fix it using program downloaded from this website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

The troubleshoot is not able to know the problem. The detailed failure is: Windows update encounters an error while searching for updates. Error code: -939523550.

App Error Log:

wuaueng.dll (608) SUS20ClientDataStore: Unable to read the header of logfile C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\edb.log. Error -546.

Final Edit:

My problem is solved. Do not read any answers here because my problem isn't involved with any virus or similar.

I solved my problem by the following step, I think lenovo recovery fails some directory if the harddisk size is different (I guess)?

Step 3: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.

can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please be assured the folder will

be created again when we visit the Windows Update site again.

  1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the

opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

  1. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
  2. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
  3. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the

opened window.

net start WuAuServ

    I had the same problem with "System Error 5:Access Denied" in a command window, so in Control Panel I searched for "services" and found under Administrative Tools -> View local services. You'll find Windows Update in there, and checking the properties of Windows Update, you'll find it's name is wuauserv. Right click on Windows Update to show possible actions, one of which is STOP. Stop it this way .

    Then in the Windows directory change Software Distribution to SDold, as above.

    Finally, restart Windows Update by right clicking and selecting START.

    Things immediately get better!

    1. Why was it necessary? Because I bought a refurb Gateway laptop in the spring of 2011, upgraded to Win 7 Professional, and was never able to get Visual C++ 2010 Express to load; it always bombed on the .NET Framework 4. Finally I got so tired of the problem that I dug into the error log, found the error 0xc8000222, and read the solutions here in this forum. Along the way I had to modify things as explained in my post, so since I got help here, I decided to post what worked for me because pristina, on 2 june 2011, had a similar problem to what I encountered. (I didn't notice that there was a page 2 to the forum, so my reply is definitely out of sync).
    2. Permanent fix? Can't say for sure....how long must I wait to declare 'permanently fixed'? I made the fix yesterday and have been using 2010 Express on and off for the last 36 hours, including one middle-of-the-night automatic microsoft update. So far it is still working.

    Disclaimer: I like to USE my computers, not fiddle with them for hours because of OS or other MS problems that require mega-big (or giga-big!) downloads and constant updates. So I have no idea if this an optimal resolution to the problem. But it seems to have worked and I got to go outside today.
