If you can just unplug from the internet.... at lest on the computer your doing your dissertation on. You won't need security patches if your not on the net.... shut off the wireless card and you'll be good while your doing the paper.

I had setup the upgrade to notify me when it's ready; now that it's published I don't know what's going to happen.

I do see in the list of my update history that it keeps on starting and failing daily.

In Windows update I'm getting an error 80240020 for the upgrade to "Windows 10 Home" update, both yesterday and today. I do not want to upgrade this computer to Windows 10 and I never asked for it. I don't understand why my computer is automatically trying to force this upgrade, and giving me a Windows update error.

I'm in the middle of a dissertation and do not want to change systems right now.

I want security patches- but not a full overhaul of my OS. What should I do?

This worked for me...

1. Access this file location C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloadand delete everything there. (Note delete only content found there and not the Download folder itself)
2. Open CMD (command prompt) with run as administrator (admin privileges) and run this command: wuauclt.exe /updatenow

The Update Window should pop-up with downloading Windows 10 again, and if your lucky it will be the complete kit this time.

You know I beta tested Windows X and did not like it.. I did not like Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 either I don't like the App concentric OS at all; they rob me of the freedom of going to my files finding what I want and editing them or changing their traits... I don't like being locked into any one program for any type of file.

I am not a gamer or locked into a office that is stymied by security issues. I like my desktop and the ease of my start menu and no I don't want those crappy tiles hanging on to it - they are useless!

So I'm glad I've bottled up the DWX folder and hope it never works!

Do it again. If there is no popup, then go to control panel and Windows update to see if the W-10 upgrade is downloading.
