Windows 7 windows update broken after disk clone

I'm unclear if I should try the microsoft hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018 to the old 500gig drive which has a good win installation (which I am continuing to use until this problem is resolved) and then clone again. It seems that someone has tried this and it didn't work. But it should work, right? I don't want to risk messing up a good installation on my 500gig drive by applying hot fix if it isn't going to work.

Any ideas appreciated but I am looking for a solution. Is there one? If there is no solution yet then I will wait. I have a little space left on my 500gig drive.

If you can make reliable and restorable backups from the old 500 GB HD,  then yes, go ahead and try applying the Hotfix to see if that resolves the issue.

Does the system have an IRSTD that can be updated ?

Same problem as others in this thread, upgrading to new segate 750gig drive on lenovo x200 laptop, 64bit win 7 and wanting to upgrade another lenovo thinkpad. Bought two of the 750 gig drives. Image clone looks good at first but update and search/index don't work in Win7 while they worked great in original drive. I have tried (as have others in this thread) several imaging software including win7 backup/restore all with same result.

FYI, the HP install solved a number of issues for me on a Lenovo T60 after upgrading to a new 500GB WD drive using Acronis True Image. I just strapped in and installed it in regardless of compatibility.

It got my search service working again. No longer have errors including

I take it what you obtained from HP applies to all systems with this device - Intel PCHM SATA AHCI Controller 6 Port

I don't understand why Sony does not offer a more recent IRRT driver than what's showing on their site for your Vaio model since it definitely is causing Windows Update issues.

Did you need to install the Hotfix after updating the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver or did installing the updated driver resolve the Windows Update issue ?
